Greentings; My name is Jim, I live in Central MA. Currently a working photographer (automotive) which I use cheap point and shoots for. My photography passion is nature. I currently own a Rebel 3ti and a Nikon D7000. From time to time I'll shoot the odd wedding or engagement photo's with a few yearbooks thrown in as well. When DSLR's were first hitting the market I was rather skeptical, but I'm so happy now because I don't have to spend $1000's in processing to get that one special shot. I got the bug as a teenager when my mom got me my first 35MM Zenit-e made in Russia. I still have it and it still works. Even the built in light meter still is functional, (although I really am not sure I want to know what powers it!!!!) It's fully manual!
At first with my DSLR I hung on the *green* settings for a bit and am still slowly learning to get quality shots in manual mode. I'm especially fond of long exposure night photography and even dabble in *light painting* from time to time.
My other hobbies are (in no particular order) rock N roll guitar playing, 4 wheel drive off road adventures, camping, ballroom dancing and vintage muscle cars.

Hi Jim. Welcome to the hog. It sounds like you have a varied background. Very nice. Looking forward to seeing more of your images. For a first post, you have done real good. The dragonfly sure looks like it has a smile on its "face."

Welcome to UHH Jim. Nice post.
Nicely done. Don't see too many of us with both a Nikon and a Canon. I guess you can argue the merits of each with yourself! I dabble in a little bit of everything myself, it stretches you out. Welcome.

Actually the Wife bought the cannon when she was just my "girlfriend" My original DSLR was a D50. I lost it for a little over a year in a divorce proceeding, but the judge made the EX give it back!
And No, the "Girlfriend" was not the cause of the divorce. I met her many months after the EX and I had split up! So save the yucks! lol.
The critique between both cameras would be like comparing apples to oranges. First the Cannon is an entry level DSLR that has a few features better than my D50 (movies and a higher ISO being the main upgrades) The D7000 is in the very higher end of consumer bodies, has a lot more features and cost a bit more. However I think the lenses I have are superior to what she got with the T3. I purchased a very nice 50MM F1.8 lens that I like very much. In the future I would like a nice wide angle, a very good zoom in the 500MM range and a good macro setup.
I did have a nice Pentax 35MM camera that had a panoramic feature that I loved. But you can do sooooooo much more with todays DSLR's.
Maybe someone could explain this to me. I read an article at one time about Megapixel's and the author stated that anything over 6.1MP was truly not going to gain you anything, and in his opinion it was not worth purchasing a body with a .....say 14MP sensor. And I must say that some of my nicer early shots were with the D50 which is a 6.1MP sensor. My experience today is that a true lens is what makes the shot. That's especially true when you compare what you get with a point and shoot with a small diameter plastic lens. The quality just isn't there even though some of the current crop of digital point and shoots are in the 24MP range. Yes, I understand that a lot of it comes down to eye, subject matter, lighting and settings. I suppose if I purchased more photography mags I would know the answer to this. It's funny because for my business I use a nikon coolpix on VGA settings. I take automotive photo's and sometimes have to upload as many as 300 or so photo's that are distributed to websites. If I used my cannon or D7000 at a higher resolution it would take hours to upload. ( I have a 30 mbps connection at home) Ok well that's my rant. Feel free to comment as you see fit. :D
