You had a great opportunity to educate that woman and explain to her how it works, maybe even offer the help her husband out with his shooting, but you willingly did not do so because you weren't strong enough. I presume you own a phone, because you could still salvage the opportunity and be a real hero.
I know this is not the pat on the back responce you where expecting. Have you ever watched the cooking shows? Are they using a stove just like yours? Ever wonder why?
If you ever DO get invited to dinner, it's because they consider you a friend and not because she wants you to make her feel stupid and be made a fool of. Not everybody is a photographer and understands. if she's smart enough to cook, she is more than smart enough to understand.
Sol, why don't you be a real freind.
Think I'm coming down to hard on you? It's not as hard as you just came down on that poor woman.
Just had to vent, thanks for listening. ;-)

As a retired professional, let me point out that once you place any lens other than a Nikon lens on your Nikon camera, it is no longer a Nikon shot. Sigma and Tamaron lenses are in fact inferior to the more expensive Nikon lenses. And yes, the lens has allot to do with it.

I don't ever get a "Nikon" shot. It's teamwork, between me, the subject, whoever supplies the light, Nikon for the camera, and whoever made the lens. And sometimes Induro for the monopod or tripod. :-)

Just how many photos have you taken with the Tamron and Sigma lenses and especially the Tamron 150-600mm lens? Probably none.

It's a fact which both sigma Tamaron will not dispute. Why do u think a Rollie lens will cost u thousands. There is nothing wrong with the other lenses for many people but once you put a non oem lens on a Nikon camera, u no longer have the quality of a Nikon. The same is true for cannon as well.

The fact is the Tamron and the Sigma lenses are not as good in quality compared to the much more expensive lenses, but come close to it and in some cases compare favorably. My point is that they are not 'inferior' to them when it comes to comparable prices and the Canon and Nikon super lenses are overpriced.
In my opinion the word 'inferior' denotes a very low degradation of quality.

I can only believe that you have your opinion because you cannot afford a better lens. You don't have to have top of the line equipment to take good photos. As a professional, I am not here to argue with you and if your not interested in learning, you should move on.

Most lenses today, if not all of them are designed by computer. The algorithms that dictate the curvature of the lens is going to be similar. OEM lenses usually are superior in the materials (metal barrel vs. plastic) and in the multi-coatings that are applied to reduce flare. Non-OEM lenses will work very well for the casual shooter but anyone that makes a living doing photography will most likely be better served with OEM lenses.

I agree. I just don't like the word 'inferior' to be used to describe excellent lenses for the money. Many or most of us photographers can not afford a $10,000-$20,000 super lens. One's ego, who can afford the expensive lens, does not justify using the word 'inferior' to put down good quality lenses that are affordable to most of us because it can be very discouraging for someone who is trying to become a photographer.

Thank you. I am just looking out for the little guy or a beginning photographer who wants to enjoy a wonderful hobby or profession and can not afford the best equipment.
More power to the photographers who can afford the best because if you want to take the great photos then buy the expensive cameras and lenses.
I am not trying to win an argument, I just want the less affluent to have a good time with photography and do their best to buy what they can afford.

nice explanation. your thoughts on affordability are true. just because a person cannot afford top of the line lenses, should not keep them from getting a less expensive oem lens. and these days, as hardly no one prints anymore, and as you don't have an ad director grafted onto your back, and oem lens will do just fine!!!
