I typically try to take comments, or posts in general, in the spirit in which they were written, which sometimes is a cynical tongue-in-cheek attempt at humorously making a point. And sometimes cynicism or sarcasm doesn't translate well with some readers, for whatever reason. Be it as it is, I really love this UHH and the various personalities that I've gotten to know and look forward to their posts, in my brief tenure here.

I would like to echo Lukan's response. I am new here too, and so far have loved all the spirited debates and comments I have been part of. I am not so thin skinned that I would take a negative comment so personally. Maybe that is because I recognize there are so many people on here that know quite a bit more about photography than I do. But I am a very quick study, and I love absorbing all the knowledge that is shared here. Anyone who would choose to be nasty on here, I would choose to ignore. Period.

And the debate goes on! I doubt that there will ever be one difinitive answer that will suit everyone. With the way the technology is going we will no doubt soon be debating whether a wristwatch camera can outperform a sunglasses camera! As far as my take on this particular debate, it seems pretty obvious to me that as the technology improves the gap between primes and zooms gets ever narrower, with the zooms having an advantage in versitility. I think it all comes down to which one fulfills your needs. I use both and wouldn't want to be without either, but if I could only have one it would be a top quality zoom, like a 24-70 or 24-105 Canon L.

When a zoom lens is made there are compromises which have to be made in order to have the convenience and versatility of a zoom. The shorter the zoom the better they are.
Professional zooms are as good as primes. Some primes are very good and ideal for certain jobs, like a wide angle for street photography or a medium tele for portraits.
Lenses made today are of excellent quality. A 50mm prime is among the best corrected lenses in photography.
If I need a 50mm lens I would prefer a prime.

The bolded statement is way too general. The best zooms may be as good as the best primes at certain apertures and at certain focal lengths. But there is no zoom that is as good as any prime at f/1.4 simply because there is no zoom that fast. Comparisons between most primes and zooms is a bit flawed because we're comparing apples and oranges. One of the few exceptions may be the new Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 which is not only fast but the IQ has been touted as phenomenal from edge to edge even when used wide open.

The new Canon 24 -70 2.8L II is said to be one of the highest resolving lenses out there. Many photographers have sold their 35 & 50 after finding what that zoom is capable of.

I would have to say that low light conditions are the real benefit with primes since their apertures receive significantly more light although newer full frames are more accommodating with higher ISO.

Another benefit would also be the increased bokeh that a prime is known for.

I whole-heartedly agree as well. This goes for a lot of things: cameras, sports cars, golf clubs or anything that requires some user-proficiency.
