The answer to what I *think* your question is, all you need is a TV or monitor with an HDMI input to use the Thunderbolt cable. There is a setting you need to make in the 'Display' part of the settings on your iMac to activate the second display.
If your monitor doesn't have an HDMI port, then you'll need a converter to change the Thunderbolt output to DVI or VGA.
This is NOT rocket science. The genius bar at an Apple store should be able to get you setup real easy.
