Can Creativity be taught?
Creativity is a right hemisphere function. The more you stimulate the right brain the more opportunities of giving birth to a creative thought.
Those of us that play a musical or speak more than one language have a greater change to deliver that aha moment.
Creativity must be inherent ! My mother played the piano ,Painted , drew very creative and interesting pictures , etc. My father played the balalaika, trumpet and was artistic as well. Both my sisters are piano player and do extraordinary art works . I play the guitar ,sculpt ,carve wood & Bone , paint -do restoration work , etc My half sister from another marriage cannot draw a straight line and has no inclination to do anything creative
You tell me !
Creativity is telling a story through your camera and eyes. If you have something to say and know how to shoot it, it will come out. And it follows, if you are a technically competent musician with no expression, a technically competent artist with no feeling for the scene, you will not get your message across. We all have to learn how to express our emotions and thoughts.

My feelings alone.....you are born with certain talents, creativity is one....
I think Artsie folks have the knack for taking wonderful photos
What you capture in your lens is in the eye of the beholder ....
I was a sought after Hair designer in a past life lol and that too is something you cannot be taught in Beauty School.....you may be able to do a basic cut or , color etc.... But to be a Creative Hair designer , and be able to look at someone and know just what compliments them does not come in a manual or even with practice....
I am convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that Beauty IS in the eye of the beholder......whether with a DSLR or a $100 snap n shoot....
. Now getting into perfection of the quality , settings for certain situations , I am horrible, but have had no formal education in photography what so ever.....now that, my friend , IS something you CAN master...... Not Creativity.....the word alone explains it ...... CREATIVITY ...... One posses it or does not......

I do this all the time. It's not that I have any technical issues. It's that I don't see a picture with the same creativity as others do. Trust me, I'm not looking for sympathy. I enjoy photography. I just wish I could find that perspective that a truly creative person sees.
I know what you mean. Take a scene that two people photograph. The average person will stand and take the photo. The creative person will squat and take a photo of that same scene, except that his/hers will demonstrate more creativity. That person just seems to know what to do.

Foyer what's its worth here are my thoughts.
1. Everyone is born with some creativity ( though some more than others)
2. Despite the best efforts of American education, some people manage to retain some creativity into adulthood.
3. Those who try really hard can learn to be creative again.
4. Genius however, is truly rare.
Yes, genius is indeed rare. It is said that there are only three people who thoroughly understand Einstein's Theory of Relativity. Sorry, but I don't know who the other two are.

I come from a musical family. We all played the piano and some of us played another instrument as well. Indeed, the family was so musical that, at one point in time, even our sewing machine was a Singer.
I wish I could answer,
I'm just a traveler. Offroad.
Looking for a story.
I went to a place once where I learned from a bunch of humble monks. The door was always guarded. I was only able to get the photo through the keyhole lock. I was blessed.
I often think we know to much and are convinced of too little.
Every time I think I know something, I usually come up empty.
There is really only one thing I know for sure and it's not taxes.
We all have a limited time on this earth. Make the most of what God has given you.
The Traveler.
THe guarded door of knowledge.
Coming up empty.

Yesterday evening, I came across a topic concerning Black and White photography. And somehow i came out with the statement "Creativity can not be taught", which is i believe. But because my statement took over the posts and sparked discussion, I wanted to bring it over to its own topic. So let me ask everyone,
Can creativity be Taught or is it something you naturally have?
Let the discussion begin
that may be why that a major motion picture they have both a director and a cameraman
I am one of the earlier Hog members and have noticed that most questions posed relate to equipment. It has made me wonder if those that are looking for creativity are trying to purchase it by buying more expensive equipment. I know I am a better photographer than I used to be but I would be no more creative with a $5000.00 camera than I would be with a $500.00 camera. I think what small improvement I have made is because I study the photos of those who are truly blessed with creativity. I however do not kid myself that at this late stage in life I will ever have the gift that some are blessed with.

I am sorry but to disagree with you. Oh some people may find being creative easy and others have to work harder at it but we can all be more creative other wise we are giving up on ourself. I am always looking at the great masterpieces and other photographers work trying to figure out the creative process. I am always trying to be a more creative photographer by trying new things and I take criticism but keep going.
