I have a hard time with Photoshop and have heard a lot about GIMP. Does anyone use it and would you recommend it? Do you have any other recommendations? Thank you.

I tried GIMP, but it was too complicated for me.
I use PaintShopPro x6 Ultimate. Just got it last week, off the shelf at Best Buy (on sale for $60)

The question is - what do you want to do?
If you need cloning and layers and ... then you need PhotoShop or GIMP.
If all you need is to add contrast, correct color, crop, etc. then something like Google's Picasa will do!

OR PaintShopPro!!
Or Faststone or IrfanView or so many others!
I tried to use GIMP but got a warning from my security provider (McAfee) it was an unsafe site.

I have run most antivirus programs and will never use McAfee again. Norton has fallen as well.

GIMP is marketed as a "works-just-like-Photoshop" product, so if you have trouble with PS, I don't think GIMP is your solution.
As others have noted, if your needs are not great, any of the lesser-tier products will be much easier to adjust to.

As St3V3M said, online editing tools are good for simple edits. I find Gimp's user interface cumbersome. I used to do software/hardware usability studies and Gimp really needs to rethink itself.
I have Serif's PhotoPlus and Adobe Photoshop Elements, but always go back to PaintShopPro 5X (a few improvements in 6X, but not enough for me to upgrade). It doesn't come close to my old Photoshop (sadly, incompatible with my new computer), but it is the closest one that is also affordable.
Bottom line though... Gimp is free and, maybe you won't find it so balky.
I have tried Gimp in the past; it seems to work fine---BUT-- the learning curve goes straight up!!! I am NOT a computer nerd, so I was overwhelmed right from the start. Its like a high school diploma vs. a PH.D. You can get there--but you will WORK. Alyn
Gimp is a great piece of software. But if you're looking for something less complicated than elements, it's probably not for you.

I've tried Gimp, if you have the inclination I think you can get used to it, that said, I use PSP, X6 now, have never had to do something it could not do, it has layers etc, easy to use and each upgrade gets easier, plenty of online support, starting to sound like an add, try it,
Bob.

Norton and McAfee are the FIRST things that I remove from ANY computer!!
I would give Gimp a 100% recommendation. I have been using it for quite a while now and find it meets all of my needs as a serious amateur. Much better than the limited Picasa and almost on par with Photoshop. Course it's free! There are several books out there for it and I now have three of them. The first two are probably good if you already know what you were doing. Not for me but will probably read again after I gain some experience for advanced techniques. The book I recommend is: How To Gimp by Kat Landreth. A google search will find it for you. It's also inexpensive as it's an ebook so I think it's $9.99 and well worth the price. Do be afraid to try Gimp as you have nothing to lose. Hope this helps. :-)
