A friend is going to get a new Mac of some kind, and I told here there is a type of coverage Apple sells only at the time of purchase. What's that called?

Actually-you can purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan anytime within the one-year limited warranty period.

The one I'm talking about cannot be bought at any time after the sale takes place. I know. I tried. If you turn around before leaving the store and go back to the sales person - too late.
I don't think it's AppleCare. That's like an extended warranty with phone support, right? The one I'm looking for allows you to go to a Genius and get help - or something like that.

Jerry its called "ONE on ONE" I believe and its for help with your new apple. it cost $100 good for the whole year.

It's a training program that gives you an hour individual tutorial and continuing classes for a year, and easy Genius Bar access. My gf did it when she bought her IMac and found it very useful. Just google Apple one to one.

I don't know Jerry. Read an article the other day about a teacher involved with a 17 year old kid in school, when asked how and why she replied that he had given her a new lap top they didn't go into details about the worm.
