Thanks for the info, now I know what to expect. I never had a lens become defective on its own, I had one (my new Tamron 28-300 zoom)dropped once in the process of going through security at the Andrews Air Force Base Air Show, but I figured it was an accident and these things happen. Eventuall after a few years the chipped plastic fell apart and I bought a new one. It really didn't occur to me at the time to try and have it repaired, I figured it would be a few hundred anyhow.
But damn them for having to search my little camera bag.

What I still don't understand about this is why Nikon will not repair grey market lenses even for a fee. Why would Nikon in Japan allow that? Its an insult to Nikon customers who legitimately purchased Nikon products, just not from an authorized dealer. After all, it still a Nikon product. I certainly understand not fixing it under warranty, but to not even look at it or service this lens for a fee is inexcusable. I would never buy another Nikon product if that is the way they treat their customers. Canon regularly services all products, whether from an authorized dealer or grey market. While they are not obligated to, and probably won't perform service under warranty for grey market purchased items, I have still seen a number of references over the years indicating that Canon has, at least occasionally repaired grey good products under warranty. That's the proper way to service customers. Nikon wake up!

yup, we call it Nikon Committing Suicide.

hard to believe, but since they went digital (sorry, but true, folks) not only will they not look at grey market equipment for a fee, the will no longer supply independent repair technicians with parts for any nikon product.

the Better Business Bureau has rated their authorised repair facilities with an "F". and yup, Canon, these days, is a lot better, and this comes from a 55 year nikon user!

If only I had known. When I bought the D90, I had immediate problems with it. Got an Err message constantly. Returned it for repair. Got it back, same problem. Finally, wrote a very plaintive letter, and they replaced the new problem camera with another new camera...which they should have done in the first place. There must be a reason why there are more Canon users than Nikon.

Nikon makes outstanding products, but on some levels at least, their service apparently sucks.

In 2012, Canon was the only camera company that reported an increase in sales. Nikon's sales for that year was 5.8 billion. It's hard to break down Canon's sales because the posting included all their products, but their volume was 14.06 billion.

Interesting factoid.... The first Canon cameras used lenses made by Nikon...

Wouldn't it be nice if all interchangeable lenses were actually interchangeable? Then if you wanted to use a Nikon 50mm f/1.4 or a Canon 50mm f/1.4 you could. The only decisions would be based on price, build quality and IQ. And the build quality and IQ question to some degree is based on perception. That would sure make the decision process much easier. Probably neither Canon or Nikon's profits would suffer too much. Inferior lenses would probably be phased out in as a result of the competition.

and these days, worth a ton o money. also, for the early zenza bronicas, nikon made all the lenses. later on, komura and finally zenzanon were making lenses for those cameras. that would include the s, c, s2, s2a, ec and ectl bronicas. i still have a great love for the s2 and s2as, my first 6x6 slr.
