Bored on a vacation in Hawaii! Oh, dear!

Definitely! And it will be frustrating to be traveling with them and seeing their eyes on their cell phones the whole time. :D

If someone didn't mention it, the most-visited tourist attraction is called something like "The Polynesian Visitor's Center" on the north shore.

While at the Arizona Memorial you might want to look at some of the other historical attractions. You have the WWII submarine Bowfin and on the Ford Island side there is the US Missouri and an air museum. Took my grandsons (10 & 18) and they loved all of the attractions. All four can be done in one long day but would recommend 2 days at a leisurely pace. You can get on Ford Island in your rental car if you have a military ID, otherwise you can take the bus from the Arizona Memorial site. The Memorial is the only free attraction -- all others you will have to pay for entry.

Diamond Head is a great hike and you can walk around it in a few hours. the bunkers are still there and the scenery overlooking Waikiki and Honolulu is great. The Polynesian Cultural Center is an all day affair. Of course you can drive around the island for a leisurely day. Enjoy your stay at the Hale Koa. We were just there last month.

Thanks for the great information. We will have to have our military ID's with us to stay at the Hale Koa as that resort is owned by the Govt of defense.

If you have a rental car, take a drive out to the North Beach. It's about a 30-45 min drive and is the site of the reportedly the finest surfing in the world. Even if you don't surf, the view is fantastic. But be sure to take your own water. I don't remember seeing any sources to purchase it there

BTW -- It only takes about 2 hours to almost circumvent the entire island. There is a part that makes you turn back because the terrain is considered too rough for regular cars. Rental car companies have it distinctly marked on their maps.

Sight-seeing in your blood -- go to the Dole Pineapple plantations along the drive.

If you can, you should try to add a domestic 30-min flight to the Big Island once you arrive at HON and spend a night there near Volcanos National Park and Princess Halemaumau. The view of the flowing active lava is better at night but you can also see it during the day as simply a black blob going downhill

Thanks so much for the great information. We are only going to be in Oahu for 5 days and will try and take in as much as we can. We will be renting a car so getting around wont be a problem. Don't think we will make it over to the Big island this time. Will have to go to North beach and check out the surfing. Should be fun. Thanks again.

WOW -- That vacation is going to be quite economical for the family. When I was a fed, I stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian at the govt rate. That was good but not as good as the deal that you are getting at the Hale Koa.

I hope you made the reservation already. They book up very quickly

Well it looks like our family vacation this year will be in Oahu, Hawaii.
We are taking our 2 sons who are 13 and 16 and will be staying at the Hale Koa Resort, which is a military resort. We already have our rental car picked out.
My main concern is they will get bored. One likes the water the other dosen't. We will be going to the USS Arizona, dole plantation, maybe Turtle bay.

If anyone can suggest any places we havent thought of, then we would love to hear them. Thanks heaps

Maybe you can go by and say hello to Obama and get some photos of the kids with the Prez. Just check out the golf courses. He'll be around somewhere.

Be sure to take the USS Missouri tour also while visiting the USS Arizona Memorial. You won't regret it.
