Just received my new Nikon 85mm f/1.8 from Adorama.
What is the best use for this lens?

Just curious -- Why would you purchase a lens no knowing what you'll use it for or why?
I did purchase it for portraits but I'm sure there are other uses for it. I just had to have it.
I use mine for Portraits. Beautiful sharpness and low light clarity.

That would be my first question. I'm contemplating buying the 85 and I've got a 50.

Love the Blackbird. Best airplane ever built. The Skunkworks, as I am sure you know, invented Stealth technology in 1964. Records set by the SR71 still stand.
I use my 85mm for a lot of things. On a crop sensor, its a decent tele-prime that ill use for distant landscapes, or just extra reach. At concerts its a good length on full frame and crop.
By default its the best length on 35mm/FX digital for portraits for my use. Others like a bit more or a bit less.
Playing around with it is better than asking a forum what to do with it. Go out and shoot.

Lenses are chosen for their attributes...the field of view, their max f/stop how much they compress foreground and background objects.
Really, there isn't a real answer to this...you can use an 85mm lens to take landscape shots if that's the field of view and framing that you are looking for.

It's my favorite portrait lens. I also use it for shooting close ups of flowers, etc.

Anything and everything except wide-angle, super close-up, and long reach telephoto shots. It's great for anything indoors where you have room to capture the whole scene, including indoor sports.
