Number one..just seems a little more interesting and original than number two. Both are great.

Thanks zodirock.

Very tough choice. Both are excellent. I think that I prefer #2 with the head at an angle.

Thanks Charles.

The first one. It really just jump out at you right at first glance and causes you to be drawn in. I have done a couple metallic aluminium prints and I know exactly what your talking about. This image on aluminium would be amazing to hang anywhere.

Thanks Greg, I was blown away by the print when I took it out of the box yesterday!

Thanks. I used a semi gloss and it was just ok. I'll give it another shot with glossy.

#1 but to be brutally honest, and I think that's what you want from groups like this, the out of focus beak takes away from the photo. You are immediately drawn to the beautiful eyes at first but then you just keep going back to the out of focus beak. I think that will take away from what otherwise is a great photo. What is the category for the contest?

I wasn't sure what to choose - especially in that I typically like matte finishes, but I thought that based on the subject matter here that glossy would work best and it was a great choice as it turned out.

Sal, it would have been interesting to compare the two. I am actually still debating about the specifics, but while I am waiting, I entered #1 in a National Geographic "Special Moments" category this morning, and I have received one feedback from someone in Sri Lanka where the viewer expresses amazement that it wasn't taken with a full-frame camera and indicates that the shot "Blew me away" when he saw it. Interestingly, it has been posted for about an hour and already has 24 people who have clicked the heart icon indicative of liking the shot. We'll see what the judges at Nat Geo think however.

I am seriously considering entering one of these two shots in a photo contest and I find myself vacillating as to which one to enter. Make the assumption that you are going to enter one of these two shots in a contest - which would you choose, and if you don't mind taking the time, I would like to know the rationale for your choice.

As an aside, I just had the direct eye contact shot printed by AdoramaPix in metallic form (aluminum) with a wood backing to stand it out from the wall. The results were knockout amazing. The metallic print brings it so alive it just knocked my socks off when it arrived yesterday. If you have ever considered doing a metallic wall hanger, I heartily recommend them!

Definitely the first one. The straight on shot causes one to focus on the eyes and not the fact that the beak is a bit soft. Nice shots!

But RRS, that is what art is all about is it not? I purposefully shot it that way to highlight the eyes. I think we sometimes have a tendency to get hung up in the rules of photography which I think tends to discourage creativity. Of course it again comes back to the judge. If the judge demands the rule of thirds, etc.,etc., it is one thing. If the judge appreciates art, it is another!

Very well said, I made my observations of having judged in "photo" contests as to looking as it more in the art form. Thank, sometimes we can't see the forest for the trees.
