I am planning on framing and hanging some of the pictures I've taken. I really want the colors to burst, so I wanted to go with glossy, but I don't like the reflection and glare it gives in the light sometimes. For this reason, I was thinking about getting Matte prints made. Is the color difference really that bad? What do you have hanging in your house, glossy or matte?

Matte and Luster will display beautifully. I am not a glossy fan. A word of warning, never let the glass touch your image.

I go with Epson Luster as well. Love it's rich look.

If picture must be hung facing a daylight window, consider using "non-glare" glass. A huge help on any print.
Cheers...

My prefferences; I like Glossey for bright collors or brightly light scenes especially sunrises and sun sets. Where light and colors are muted I like using Satins. I use HP paper and Red River papers with my HP 8800 and am very satisfied. Also I took a matting course and matt all my pictures. If I have a picture I don't want matting around I fit a sliver of matt material at the edges of the frame behind the glass. It lifts the glass off the picture and eliminates the sticking problem. Be sure to fasten the picture to the backing. I hope this info helps.

I just joined Uglyhedghog...... just reading the matte vs. glossy comments helped answer a lot of my questions on this subject.
Thanks, Jerry.

If you're framing, you should be thinking in terms of glossy or coated glass. You can put a glossy print behind a matte glass and the reflection and glare you speak of are greatly diminished. Glass is necessary to avoid UV fade when hanging prints in your house.

Prefer the satin or luster look. I never use glossy. The type of paper I've been using the last few years is Kodak Ultra Premium, it's 11 mil. I recently purchased a Canon Pro Pixma II 9000 so I might try some Canon paper. I've heard you should use the same brand paper as your printer but I don't know if there's any truth to that or if its marketing.

Several photo paper mfgrs make great types of quality photo papers and provide the appropriate settings on the various brands of printers to get the best results. I use Red River and Hp papers for my HP 8850. Red River being a bit cheaper.
