We are scheduled to go on a cruise the end of April. I'm trying to decide if my tripod is necessary to pack. Any suggestions for this week long cruise will be welcome. We have ports @ Bahamas, St.Thomas and St. John of the Virgin Islands. I have a Canon Rebel XSi with a Tamron 18-270 Lens. I'm also wondering about buying a 2X Extender for maximizing farther away shots. :D

Forget the 2X on that lens, the results will be terrible. A small tripod would be handy, but if you're lucky, it will be nice and sunny the whole trip so light shouldn't be a problem. Your lens range is nice for a one-lens setup.

Be mindful that the bright light and sand could give you underexposed images. Check your LCD and then use exposure compensation if needed. Remember to bring a circular polarizer with you, it will make a big difference there. Most of all, have a great time!

Tripod is a must for me. I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Polarizer circular a must.

I also agree that all the reflections and white beaches can cause trouble. Instead of checking your LCD I would look at the HISTOGRAM. It does not take long to learn to use it. A very valuable tool!!!!

Yes I would take a tripod, especially if You plan on taking night shots. Great islands for photo taking and the lens you have should cover all your shots.A 2X extender would just complicate the shots and , I think is not necessary.Put your tripod in your luggage , so as not to cause any flack going thru security check points.

Just returned from a Bahamas cruise. I took my large tripod and carried it around with me in Freeport and Nassau--without using it once. I did use it back in Florida at a wildlife reserve, but not much since it was sunny. I'd recommend a small tripod for occasional use (the Joby Gorillapod sounds interesting), but not on the ship unless it's docked--too much vibration.

A small tripod would be handy for those beautiful sunset shots that everyone likes to take.

Do you have a certain brand to recommend. I just have a UV filter on my camera now.
