I did the same- I have an almost mint EOS 3, I had it serviced and it runs like new. Don't forget to set up the eye sensor !

[quote=Dave Johnson]Hello fellow hogs, I hope to be upgrading my film camera in the next month or two and I'm looking for opinions. My digital camera is a Canon 5DM3 with an assortment of lenses that I would like to use with a film camera. My current film camera is a Canon AE-1 with it's own set of FD lenses.

I'm leaning toward a Canon EOS 3. Am I leaning in the right direction or is there a better option?[/quote
The EOS 3 is one heck of a camera, it is one I might get too (I have a EOS 1v that I really like, but the 3 is one I really would like to get too. But that said, I would give my 1v for the Pentax LX I had a long time ago.

as a dedicated Nikon user, i have also owned and used the Canon F1 and F1N camera bodies. i can't think of any other Canon bodies i'd rather own. the most professional and durable bodies Canon ever made, you could (not that you'd want to) drive nails with them!

I'm lucky enough to have owned my LX since new, however I think my EOS 3 has it beat with the focussing features, also my Canon L glass works perfectly with the auto-focus and Image Stabilisation. Having said all that, the LX will never be sold!

I to have a 5DM3 but my last film was the A2E and it took not quite a beating but some lousy weather and never failed me. Because of my husbands job we lived in England and Scotland for just under a year. We went to a lot of ruins where the stairs were narrow and as much as I tried the camera did hit the walls, it rained often and there was dense moist fog. Camera took great photos and it uses ef lenses

Nice link! I will add two comments not mentioned in the link where the content dates from 2003: 1) the 1v with the power boost is a heavy piece of equipment even before attaching a lens. 2) Only the 1v is still certified with ongoing EF lenses when there's a feature that behaves differently on a 1-series body vs other EOS bodies. Check down in the fine print...

Why are you doing this? I mean, I bought a digital Pentax to use my old thread-mount lenses from film days, but that was purely for nostalgia sake. That is a good enough reason, but it doesn't seem to be your reason. Film is so often a crap shoot, and $300 would go towards a digital upgrade, no?

I've used the Elan series cameras. They're great for a lighter-weight camera. My favorite camera is the EOS-3. It depends on what you want to do . If you need speed and agility, the -3 is great. If you do mostly landscapes, then you might like the EOS-1.

Do get the eye-controlled focus, though. Makes focusing a breeze! Sure wish my digital camera had it!

I'm not limited to $300 necessarily, I just expected to pay less than that for an EOS 3. The 1V sounds good but is it worth the extra money. Is the 1N a big step down?

Too bad you are stuck to Canon lenses. Right now the best 35mm SLR film camera is the Nikon F6. I know this doesn't help you, just wanted to put in 2 cents.

Hey hollidaypr, as I said in the opening post I want to be able to use my L lenses with a film camera. I've been having fun with my AE-1 but the FD lenses in that kit are no where near the quality of my L lenses.

I don't mind spending a few dollars to have some fun especially if I can use it with the stuff I already have.

Hi CHG_CANON, I'm not overly concerned with the weight of the camera, the camera and lenses I have are pretty heavy already. That's not to say I wouldn't prefer a lighter load. :)

Eos 3 is an excellent camera you will find no problems there.also your ef lens will fit it. The eye control is good fun.

Thank you all for your comments, even you Nikon guys :). Really, I do appreciate it. I'm probably LESS sure of what I'm going to do :) but I will be making a more informed decision when the time comes. I will continue to monitor this thread so if you still have comments please keep them coming.

hi, just wanted to post a concern. one of the LX's weak spots were the mirror bumpers. they are made of some sort of synthetic rubber and they degrade over time, become sticky and keep the mirror from lifting at exposure. i don't know of a lot of photo techs who have replacements, but perhaps they can make something to use should this ever happen to you - i sure hope not, as the LX is the most nifty Pentax i ever used!
