re: the lens. Just try to find a new one.

I agree, it's not easy to find. B&H claims it's in stock:

A used one is much cheaper at KEH:

Are those FX or DX format lenses? I see the dreaded 'D' in the name. Isn't this a cropped sensor lens?

The "dreaded 'D'" means it gives distance information to the camera so it can be used for better flash output. If a lens has a "G", it's also implicitly a "D". D does not mean DX, any Nikon DX lens uses both letters to say that. What is dreaded, for some, is the missing "AF-S", so it does not have it's own focusing motor. If you have a D3x00, D5x00, D40, D60, it will not autofocus. If you have a D7x00, D80/D90 or above, everything will work great.

Thanks, my Nikon lenses are so old, except my 85mm, that I have never paid this any attention.

If you like shooting close, this one is great! Most people use it for flowers and bugs, I use it for eyes. :-)
(This is straight out of the camera, only cropped and jpeg compression increased.)

Real nice pictures. How would you compare the 300s. To your new 800.
I am in the market for a new camera myself - thinking of the D7100. But, I have had pretty good results with my old D40. !
My interest seems to go towards cropping within a picture and blowing that up, not the whole picture. So, I am jus trying to get other opinions - more pixels, larger pictures present more storage space neede etc . Trying to get more user info. Thank you

Hi Windman,
I find that the D800e can take such sharp pictures (with the right lens) that I can crop and still maintain sharpness. The Bee pictures were all extremely cropped. With my D300s I did not do nearly the extreme cropping. Also, for a guy who is in his 60's, I find the larger view finder on the D800 much easier to use. I have a KatzEye split screen to help with focusing on the D300s but I don't need one on the new camera. One thing that sold me on the D300 and D800 are the build quality.

I just happened to be shooting with the old 55mm micro nikkor when I shot the bees. I also have the following lens:

105mm af f/2.8D micro
28-300mm af-s f/3.5-5.6 G ED VR
50mm af f/1.8D
500mm f/5 reflex

I believe I will need some more glass to take advantage of the D800 capabilities.

I have just bought the D800E as well. Still getting used to it. It looks like you have it set to around 3200 ISO?

Hi Saxkiwi,

The bee and deer pics were taken with 800 ISO. My dog was taken with 200 ISO.

These were my very first shots with the new camera, trying out some of my lens. I wanted to see how sharp I can get my shots. You will love your D800E. Thanks.

Yes, the D800e will prompt some new glass.

I own the D800 and should have bought the D800E. Nice first shots and I thought the first shot of the Bee was excellent and the others were also very good. Shoot RAW!

Hi Bill,

I usually shoot raw, but I found my version of ViewNX2 on an old desktop would not allow me to edit the NEF images from my D800E. I plan to get a new laptop next month and will install the new ViewNX2 on it. Once I know it can edit NEF, I will switch to only RAW. Until then I am shooting RAW + JPG. Thank you.

You can extract the embedded JPG from the NEF file for now. But why not just upgrade ViewNX2, it only takes a few minutes (plus download time, depending on your connection speed). No need to wait for the new laptop.

Hi Amehta,
I might just do that once I get the nerve. I just hate doing anything on my old Windows desktop. It is slow, still running XP. Thanks.

I understand the hesitation, there's some software I don't update for years, even though I could. But in this case, it's holding you back.

There are also other options, but they also involve installing new software, so you probably don't want to hear about it. :-)

Just in from B&H and took my first shots. I still have my D300s and the transition to new camera was quite easy! Below are some first test shots. Cropped images were processed in ViewNX2. Thank you.

Excellent first shots.

Camgratulations on the 800e, I can see you are already using and enjoying it.
Since you are already having second thoughts or buyers remorse about the camera the best therapy is to rid your life of the problem, toss it out the window, let me know when the camera toss is going to take place so I can a box some soft pillows to catch
