Check Photozone website. Independant, objective, lens evaluations. Usually three pages of test results per lens.

I will explore the world of closeups with the 7-200--frankly I have never done so--I have always opted for the macro

When you want to get really close (1:1), you can't be a macro lens. I wouldn't rush to get rid of that. And you get images that other people don't, which is part of the battle these days. :-)

Photo taken with Canon 100-400 at full zoom, hand held, cropped. I love this lens, although it is a little heavy for me, a senior citizen.

I shoot with 5DMarkIII and 7D as well Canon100-400IS for wild life sharp lens. but would nice to get bit more distant. I do have canon 70-200II IS2.8 fast glass, excellent lens for wedding, studio, and medium distant sport, best lens in the world, but it is not 1/1 macro. I shoot macro with 85mm Tamron macro1on1, is OK lens, but not a super quality.

Tamron 85mm macro
Tamron 85mm macro...

I am a long-time user of the Canon 100-400 and it is probably my most used lens. It is very flexible in range, sharp and has a near focus point of about 6 feet making it a great lens for butterflies. I have used it with extension tubes when I needed to get even closer. In a pinch I have used it for landscape as well, at the 100 end, of course. Sometimes when 100 isn't wide enough, I just take 2-3 shots and stitch them together in Photoshop afterwards.
If I could own only one lens, this would be it.

The 100-400 is my most used lens and coupled with a 7D is a perfect birding/wildlife combo. The attached were taken with that lens and as you can see it does close ups well too.

I have it as well. For close up OK lens, but is not for a macro.
Save and get 1/1 macro lens.

I have the Canon 100-400 & I take pictures of wildlife of which I am never close enough. I have used it at 400 95% of the time.
In a perfect world I would get a 400 prime. It is lighter focuses just as fast & sharper, in my opinion.

After that I would look for a longer lens like the Sigma 200-500.

That would be perfect for me.

nice shots and I keep vacillating between the 70-300 4.5 IS and the 100-400---the problem is I would have to sell a lens to get a lens and right now I love all my lenses (70-2004l, IS, 16-35 2.8L, 100 is macro, and 24-105 4L IS---so I will wait awhile

To get 1-1 macro on hi quality and sharp, I believe you need Prime lens and do forget zoom's , lens to have is 85, 90 mm 1/1 macro lens or so,,

Careful when you go with a 2X. With this you lose electronic connection with the lens. Must do everything via manual.

This is not factual. My Canon 2xlll retains all electronic connections with my Canon lens.

I am thinking about selling my 70-200 4L IS to get more "reach" (I need to make a choice of keeping the 70-200 which I really like and often use with a 1.4 extender). I am pondering two options: the Canon 100-400 or a Sigma or Tamron product in the 400 to 500mm range---I have heard the 100-400 is only good for wildlife and sports but I like landscape photography even more. My other lenses are Canon 16-35, 24-105, and 100 IS macro so I think portraits and some landscape photography is covered. I use a Canon 60d body. Would you go with the Canon 400mm (there is also a fairly new 70-300mm 4.5 L IS Canon lens at about $1300-$1500)? Would you go with Sigma or Tamron--heard they aren't well built and as sharp?

Sense you use the 70-200mm with a 1.4X TC you have a reach of 320mm. You state you prefer to shoot landscape over wildlife photos.

Considering this I don't know why you are looking at the 100-400mm lens. It is a great lens but as you know it is mainly used for wildlife. If you just want more reach on occasion look at the Canon 400mm f5.6L prime. This lens will also handle a 1.4X TC. I use it with a Tamron TC with no problems, giving me a 560mm lens.

Don't get me wrong, I own both the 100-400mm and 400mm prime lenses, but I shoot mainly wildlife photos. The IQ for both lenses is about the same. The main reason for recommending the 400mm prime is weight, it is a much lighter lens making it quicker when tracking a BIF. I know the 70-200mm lens is an excellent lens, even with a 1.4X TC it has good IQ and would not consider getting rid of it.

It sounds like you have things pretty well covered except for ultra wide angle and the long range lenses.

Another lens to consider is the Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 lens. here are two photos taken with it using a Sigma 2X TC, giving you a 600mm lens. Both using AF. The first was taken in the rain, the second in a snow storm. It is an excellent lens with great IQ. It also works well with a 1.4X TC.

I know, something else to stir the pot and confuse you with.

Very nice shots, IMHO. Buy some seed for the bird in photo #2, he looks as though the "ice" diet may be wearing a little "thin". We're these shot through a plate glass?
