I have found that the US photo mags are a waste of money with the exception of Rangefinder Mag which is a free one to professionals.
I do however, subscribe to "Digital Camera World" from the UK and the new Mag for Nikon owners. The Brits have so much more educational and hands on articles. It costs more, but well worth the extra bucks.

Popular Photography, though I drool over the pictures in Outdoor Photography in the bookstore.

I will, no longer, pay to read ads. Has anyone ever read a review, in any of the photography magazines, that was real critical? Is it a coincidence that a big spread, ad wise, often appears in the same edition as a review. There is more ad space, than real content.

Sort of, but not exactly. The ad is sold after the review. You're right that critical reviews seldom appear, but this is not just to keep the advertisers sweet: you'd be amazed at how many readers whine and howl if there's the faintest criticism of something they've bought (or even want) because it impugns their judgement.

There have been times, to be sure, when I have returned a product without reviewing it, saying something like, "I do not think I can review this favourably, because..." A list of faults/problems then follows. In other words, if you see a good review that I've written, it's sincere, and I try to point up the faults as well as the advantages of a product.

It's also true that something I'd not touch with a ten-foot pole, someone else will love, so it's worth bearing that in mind too.

Cheers,

R.

Thanks Roger. You always seem to bring a more realistic commentary and level "head" to these discussions. And you are right about the magazines and other publications.

I subscribe to Outdoor Photography mainly, but have a lot of photography books that I have purchased over the years that were mainly from Scott Kelby, etc. These books are very specific in nature and are outstanding in their content. It is just like taking private lessons from the authors. If you are not a member of NAPP (National Association of Professional Photographers) you will not be able to see all of their web site unless you ARE a member. Believe me when I say that it is worth every penny of the fee!

Not in decent magazines.

Of course, you can always go to the library and read them for free, but it's just not the same.

Nor does it support honest journalists who want to write good reviews. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.

My understanding is that almost all magazines (and books and newspapers) are sent to the printer in an electronic, digital format. Basically the entire magazine, cover, ads and all, is ready to go online!

Sort of. The point is, you'd be crazy to print out the whole damn' thing, ads and all. It would cost more in paper and ink than subscribing to the paper edition.

The main reason to buy the magazine 'for real' is simply that you'd rather read it in paper form (as I would).

After that, it's a simple price/demand curve. How much more do you prefer it on paper?

R.

I'll have to work out how to forward this to Joe Farace...

Yes, I know it's just a typing error, but sometimes they're irresistible.

I don't know about general photography mags, for the most part after you've been at for awhile it seems most of them cater more to the beginner. If you are a Photoshop user in my opinion there are only two worthwhile magazines. Photoshop User and Photoshop Creative.

Will do. It was just so irresistible!

We all make typing mistakes like that, and I know it's bad taste to pick up on them, but you have to admit that it was a humdinger.
