Nikon D70s

Could anyone please help. I was given a well used D70s over a year ago and have since given it to my stepdaughter's son who has had it for about three months.
It has stopped working and the screen states that I cannot take pictures with this card. The display on top of the camera has the flashing letters CHA.
I formatted the card, but to no avail.
To the best of my knowledge, this card has been with the camera for a considerable time. It is a Sandisk and gives about 2300 exposures.
Having passed on this camera as a 21st birthday gift, I feel a little guilty about it's short life. Does anyone have an idea?

CF cards don't last forever. Have you tried a new card?

First, try a different card and format it in the camera. You can buy another on ebay for a good price. I've gotten cameras on ebay with under 500 shutter clicks. Always get a shutter count before you bid.

I have had this message on my D70. But with perseverence, and a few re-inserts of the card, it started working again. Try a few more times. Best of luck.

I had what sounds like the same problem with a D70s. To resolve, I put the CF card into a slot I have on my computer. I used Window 7 to format the CF card. Before starting the reformat, I changed the Allocation Unit Size to 'Default allocation size' and I deselected 'quick format'. I then took the resulting card and put in the camera and reformatted again. It's been a few months so my memory on the technical details may be inaccurate, but for sure: formatting in the computer and then in the camera solved my problem. The source seems to be deleting pictures using something other than the camera. We began to copy pictures off the card and then reformatting the CF rather than deleting pictures.

The D70s is a rather old model, in fact I still have one too. I think you're problem is most likely the card and it's not necessarily a bad card either.

The D70s was designed for the cards at that time which means CF cards that are relatively slow compared to today and perhaps only about four or so gigabytes. I'd try to get hold of an old card from that era, format it in the camera, and then try it out. I bet it will work.

If it does work then your other card may be too new and thus beyond what the camera is able to handle or too old, meaning falling apart. Flash memory is not forever.

If you still have a problem after the next issue could be a bent pin in the CF slot. That is not an easy fix but you can tell if you have a problem by examining the slot with a magnifying glass. Each pin has to be perfectly vertical.

Beyond that I suppose it's possible that that the camera has ended its useful life but that would be my last guess, that's a really reliable camera, mine still works perfectly despite its age.

Is it possible that the pins in the camera's card slot are bent / broken? If so, the card slot will require replacement.

I have a D70s that i bought when it first came out. I use it now for IR. I've always liked Lexar cards. I have in it Lexar Platinum 11 8GB 200 speed card which was bought not that long ago.

I've had two D70 cameras used for work that started showing that error. New cards or reformatting attempts sometimes worked, but not consistently. In my line of work, we can't be messing around with a camera that we find unreliable, so we ended up replacing them. That's probably not the solution you were looking for, though. Some of the other postings have some repair solutions that might be worth trying, good luck.

Format the card in the camera Doc ..... if that doesn't work try another card ..... remember that it takes a type 1 compact flash ..... always format the card in the camera .....

For me, a dozen different (but identical specs) cards and numerous attempts to reformat still didn't make it reliably work. Even when a card would start working, simply cycling the power off then on might throw another error code.

Bad battery maybe Doc ..... sounds like it could be a power issue but the CHA code is supposed to mean that there is a card issue ..... make sure the contacts are clean ..... and try a factory reset too? (Hold the Bkt button and the metering mode button down at the same time for a few seconds, both of these buttons have a green dot next to them. Compact Flash cards for these are very inexpensive, some for less than $10.00.
