And exposure times. Very long exposures can result in more noise.

The 60D is pretty much limited to 800 ISO in low light. It does better in good lighting if you are upping the ISO for the purpose of gaining a faster shutter speed. The 7D and 70D will do much better than the 60D at higher ISO's, as will the T5i.

I can't shoot higher than 800 for the same reason.

However, the T5i is much better with higher ISO.

I have a 60D and took this picture at around 9:30pm last June of a house about half a mile across the lake. Sigma 70-200m 2.8 ISO 6400 1 second at F4 on a tripod. I didn't do anything to it post. Doesn't sound noisy to me...

When you use a tripod it gives your camera the opportunity to let in how much light is needed for the image. So it is not very surprising a 2.8 lens @ f4 would have a minimum amount of noise being set at such a high ISO"6400".
1 second shutter speed would be ten times the exposer time as if you where to set your shutter @ 1/100 of a second.

All I use is Canon's Zoom Browser to 'play' with my images. Here's the info from the properties window:
File Name night.jpg

Firmware Firmware Version 1.0.9

Tv( Shutter Speed ) 1
Av( Aperture Value ) 4.0
Metering Mode Evaluative Metering
Exposure Compensation 0
ISO Speed 6400
Auto ISO Speed OFF
Lens 70-200mm
Focal Length 200.0 mm
Image Size 5184x3456
Image Quality Fine
Flash Off
FE lock OFF
White Balance Mode Auto
AF Mode Manual focusing
Picture Style Standard
Sharpness 3
Contrast 0
Saturation 0
Color tone 0
Color Space sRGB
Long exposure noise reduction 0:Off
High ISO speed noise reduction 0:Standard
Highlight tone priority 0:Disable
Auto Lighting Optimizer Standard
Peripheral illumination correction Enable
File Size 3356 KB
Drive Mode Self-Timer Operation
Live View Shooting OFF

I also remember using my Sigma 1.4 tele converter that night which is why the aperture is f4.0
So I 'adjusted' it a bit and night2 is cranked up a little.

Thank you for so many great comments. Perhaps my photos will improve in LR editing. For the moment, I am using a flash whenever the ISO would otherwise exceed 800 on my 60D.

Thanks again.

Hi!

I use the Canon 60D and have been successful using iso 2000 and even greater. I use Topaz Denoise5 and am happy with it. Also I would consider NeatImage

http://neatimage.com/

In a former thread JR had given the link to another denoise program. I downloaded it and it loaded a bunch of crap on my machine, so I would stay away from that one.

I haven't used the Canon software, even though I have it, but I would think that would be worth a try as well.

Hope this helps!

I usually get very good results with my 60D even at 1600, and occasionally get acceptable results at 3200, however 3200 really requires some noise reduction tweaking in Lightroom. Depending on various factors, 1600 is usually fairly noise free although at larger sizes noise starts to be more noticeable.

My first response to this shot is eerily beautiful. I like it a lot. Good work.
