What is the "easiest" way to convert old VHS tapes to digital?
Is there a good way and an easy way to convert VHS tapes to digital (in that I am somewhat "technically challenged")?
I found a service in my town that did this. I thought it was expensive....
If you are in US, I think Walgreens offer this service.

Same problem--did not work well either. Thanks for the response. Also thank everyone who has or is going to respond. I do not want to overlook anyone. I appreciate the help and as always, learn a great deal when receiving information from this forum!

Thanks--actually I am wanting to convert "home movie" type VHS to digital to preserve them. Do you think what you are suggesting is still the best method. Thanks again for what you have suggested
Dwallen, your home movie conversions can be done very well on a VHS to DVD commercial machine. Since there is no copy protect involved, your results should be very good.
If you are interested, I have a barely used VHS/DVD machine. Just pay the shipping from Houston, TX, and it is yours, free. I have been looking for a home for this machine for a couple of years and hope you can use it. Please advise. Mercer.

I've been using something similar to what JR1 posted, and it works perfectly. It's a nuisance hooking up the VHS and the computer and then burning to a disc, but it can be done easily. Once the tape starts rolling, you just sit back and let it go.

I used my old VHS and put it on top of my C.D. burner. I had to do all my family video's that way. It took a couple weeks but well worth it.

What has the Camera got to do with the conversion of VHS to

Probably nothing if you are only talking VHS. I needed the camera to get my miniDV tapes onto the PC so I could use a disk.

I have a Panasonic VHS/DVD recorder that does a very nice job. I am in the process of converting over all of the VHS tapes that I made of my daughter when she was young to DVD. Not terribly time consuming as all I need to do is insert the VHS tape and DVD and cue them up to the start and then I can leave and do other things while the transfer is being made.
Hi dwallen,
Rather than invest in a converter you might try CostCo if you have one in your community. I've had very good success with their service and the price seems reasonable to me. Take care & ...

I bought my VHS/DVD recorder for less than $60 bucks.
And I can do the conversions on my own schedule.
Thanks for the tip, I just ordered it.
I use the Roxio VHS to DVD package. It's under $50 at Amazon.com. Comes with an adapter to go from the outputs of the VHS player to a USB computer input. Has a CD with the software for a pc.
I have used it to copy all my old VHS tapes. The quality of the tape is poor compared to a DVD, but it is useable.
Good luck.
