Well gee Del, I must have misunderstood you then, because it looks to me like that is exactly what you are suggesting.

Yes - you have certainly misunderstood - as any intelligent person can plainly see, but to humour you, please show me where I volunteer any one to do anything - and, if so, whom? It would be up to someone who understands programming better than I, or certainly You, to advise if it is not so simple -without attempting to start WW111.

Know what you mean. I have a site on FineArtAmerica, and feel discouraged about a lot of the contests as there is a lot of soliciting for votes between 'friends', leaving much deserving work and real art at the bottom line. i'ina

I have not taken part in too many of the contests, but when I have, I have been a bit disappointed at how far down the list I am.

When I vote, I go through and vote my own, of course, but I also vote for a whole bunch of others. I was a bit surprised to see how many photographs got 1 vote out of 1 user. So, these people are only voting for their own pictures... Is that not 'weighting the game' a bit? Each time I have checked the ratings, there is a big block right in the middle, between the ones a bunch of people like, and the ones who share their vote around.

I would suggest to those doing this, that they at least check out the other entries... It's like, one whole vote only coming from the person who entered it, is like a 'null' result.
I have not taken part in too many of the contests,... (show quote)

It seems strange to me that it should even be possible to vote for your own picture. I'm a contributor to Pixoto who run an "Image Duel" system. Just choosing the best between successive pairs of images...but your own images never appear to you...it's other people who get to see and vote on them. It seems pointless to me to vote on you own image. If you didn't like it you wouldn't have posted it. It's a no brainer

About the voting:

Each week I generally find 5 to 15 photos I like and for which I want to vote. So, I do. I generally vote for my own among them. That is because (1) I usually like the photos I have submitted; and, (2) it is discouraging to see my photos earn a big fat "0" every week.

Exactly! I don't submit a photo unless I think it is good enough, so why wouldn't I vote for it? I see nothing wrong with that. My point was the people who *only* vote for their own entry... If you check the voting on the last several contests, you will see the block of entries in the middle with votes of 1 (1). I don't think I have had anyone else vote for any of my entries, so the score is something like 0.025 (1) or something. Whatever the fraction is, which I have also given to 'n' other entries. It *would* be nice to get a vote (even a partial) from someone else, I have to admit. Maybe I am not good enough yet, and I can live with that. One day...!

If you are going to allow people to vote for their own entry then you have to expect they are only going to vote for their own entry. If you have the mentality that you are going to give yourself an slight edge over someone else, then why do you expect them to help out others? Kind of defeats the whole purpose of voting for yourself in the first place.

Why is that? I vote for all the ones that I like, and if I didn't like mine, then why would I have submitted it in the first place? It's not to give myself any kind of edge - it's not like this is a close race or anything!

The type of people that vote for themselves are typically voting for themselves to give themselves an upper hand, if you truly believed in your work, then why would you need an extra vote?

if you do win, and you win by one vote.. does that really make you a winner? Does it mean that more people believed your image was superior to the image that placed second? No it means you won because you voted for yourself, it's kind of like stacking the votes, don't you think? I would rather win knowing that 10 people really did believe my image was the best out of the bunch, not that 9 people believed it and I pushed the rating up by one vote cause I couldn't fight the urge to pat myself on the back.

As for your comment about "I vote for all the ones that I like, and if I didn't like mine, then why would I have submitted it in the first place?" well the fact you believed in that image enough to submit it, should be proof enough that you think it's your best chance, there is no need to vote for it.

How about entrants can not vote for their own image.

You have 3 votes:
The first being worth 3 points.
The second being worth 2 points.
And the third being worth 1 point.

And you can not use them all for 1 image. They must be split between 3 images.

Just a thought.

Interesting stuff. I have never voted for myself either. As the contest week unfolds I check the Hedgehog once a day for topics of interest, and to see the creativity on display. When I note voting is in progress I usually select the one shot I feel defines the perimeter of the contest after looking through all the shots. Once in a great while I split my vote just because I'm waffling.
As others have stated, I too am surprised by contest photographs that receive strong votes, and those that--in my view--were more contest appropriate entries that get no votes at all. What I try to take away from all of this is that perception and taste vary greatly. It makes me want to try harder! One day I would love to make the winner's circle, but it continues to elude me. I put that on my talent and not on the voters.

So you were just flapping your jaws for the sake of it then?
You weren't actually suggesting that anyone should actually do anything at all, in the direction that you were alluding?
Do you just like flapping ideas around then, without having any conviction about them, or the balls to defend those ideas?
Thats the second time now you have attempted to insult my intelligence and claimed that yours is superior. I would be careful making claims that you cannot back up if I were you.

The voting does seem like an odd way of doing it. Not sure what would be the fairest way. Maybe 3 votes per person? Then you can vote for yourself plus 2 others. Or you give each photo a star rating of 1-5? The problem is, some contests have many entrants, and it can be very time consuming to view them all and then vote on each. I saw that many entrants had 0 votes.

Why would you possibly want to vote for yourself? If anything, a "self-vote" should be disallowed-- not encouraged.

I wonder how much work it would be for Steve to enforce a rule that said you can't vote for yourself? Would he have to check each entry individually? It could be time consuming.

Hey, If I get a .24 vote, I am excited, and I know I am ahead of all the people that got 1 full vote. It's pretty unlikely that someone is going to use their whole vote on you unless you have a super awesome photo. So we know who voted for all those so-so photos in the middle that have 1 full vote. We know who you are. :-D
