Christmas Cactus Has Holidays Mixed Up

This Christmas Cactus was taken as a small cutting from one over a hundred years old. It usually blooms twice a year. Easter and Thanksgiving, never Christmas.

What a beautiful plant. So maybe it isn't a Christmas cactus but really a Thankful Easter cactus.

It's a sign of the times, HT. Even the cactus knows Christmas has become taboo.

You did well--they are pretty but hard to get a pretty picture. This is quite pleasing. You know, Hanukkah starts on Thanksgiving this year so no wonder your cactus is confused.

Ha ha, Country's Mama, I'll bet you are right. A very old man gave me the cutting about twenty years ago from a plant that belonged to his mother.

Thanks Carlysue. I'll try more photos tomorrow. I want to use more depth of field to get all the flowers in focus and see how that looks.

According to the EXIF data, you shot these with a Canon S90. Does that camera let you control the aperture setting?

Yes, I can control everything with this little camera. I took more cactus flower photos this morning with aperture setting on F8, which is the maximum. Haven't loaded them yet.
I've been hankering after a new camera, but I am still learning to make the most of this one. Being active on UHH has convinced me that my next major expenditure should be a 27" Dell 2713 IPS monitor. It will give me the most bang for my buck right now.

My wife keeps ours in shady area during summer, waters occasionally, then puts into a cool place during the fall (for 2 or 3 months). When brought back to the warmth at the Holidays it will flower.

Aha! I do that with an Amaryllis bulb. Didn't know the cactus would respond to that treatment. I just leave it in a "garden window" in the kitchen all year. Thank you for the tip!
