What this all means is that in a competitive environment people are paid what their services are worth as determined by the marketplace. Sadly, this of course does NOT hold true for the majority of the government bureaucracy.
Which, unfortunately, is about 80% of all employment at this time.

Is that anything like buying something for $100 you do not need because it was on sale and you "saved" $5?

You couldn't be more correct. We cannot afford to upset them in case they retaliate and foreclose the loans. Would't that be the pits?

Unfortunately, not all of us are "unique", in the context I think you're using it.

But, that's life.
It's survival of the 'fittest' and always will be. There are those born with advantages such as financial means, social prominence, good looks, high intelligence, talent, athletic ability, etc. and those that are born with low IQ's, being poverty stricken, homeliness, drug addicted, poor environment, depression or mental illness, etc. We all have to deal with the hand that we are dealt to the best of our ability. If we don't then who is to blame. The responsibility of our society is to care for those who have legitimate needs and develop a policy of social welfare that discourages indolence.

“If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as a Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, 'Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.”

With the exceptions of a couple of cosmetic surgeons I know, I have never met anyone that got into health care with the intent of getting rich.
Ted...you must come to Florida. I have never met a doctor here who wasn't in it for the money. Do you think folks want to become dentists because they feel sorry for those with bad teeth? Have you been to a chiropractor lately and had your hair analyzed and your biorhythms checked?

How many doctors are members of country clubs and drive a Lexus because that was their real goal? Where's the compassion and caring when PCP's give you 5 minutes because they have 4,000 patients? Hospital deaths from medical errors are at 195,000 per year. Where are the healers? They hand you a RX to make you feel like something's been done and you are out the door.

Nurses are a totally different story. Most nurses are altruistic in their motives. To me, they are the glue that holds healthcare together. Even then they are taken away from direct patient care, which is given to aids and volunteers and stuck in front of a computer screen all day.

Train...do you realize that if you did that 1,000 times a year and saved that $5 each time you would have $5,000 in the bank?

At the hardware store recently I approached the checkout counter with my items.
The clerk swiped each item. The total shown on the screen came to $1.21.
I offered the young clerk a $5.00 bill, a quarter and a penny. She did not know what to do!
She finally ask me if I had any other change. I said, “no”. She tried to hand me the quarter and the penny. I refused to take it. (Just to see what she would do.)
Flustered, she called for her Manager. He came out and made the proper change for me. (Four ones, and a nickel). The look he gave me told the whole story!

Being a little judgmental aren't we? I've run into this situation several times including about three weeks ago. I had to explain to the young lady that all she had to do was ring in what I gave to her and it would work out. She asked her manager if I was right and the manager had to show the young girl how to do it. Another time I was in a gas station store and they were selling hot dogs at two for 99 cents. The clerk had to get help when I only bought one.

It is a sad comment on our educational system.

I must argue this statement.
The current tax structure is keeping more money in the hands of corporations while institutions such as public schools and hospitals are struggling due to decreased tax revenue. So, a teacher who graduated from college, works 10+ hours a day educating our future leaders, and chose this profession to make a change in the world is crapped on by their employer every day by being paid lower wages than the bartender down the street. Now tell me, how is it the poor teacher's fault that more and more funding is taken away from education while corporations are given a slew of tax incentives, huge bonuses and tax-payerbailouts?? Your statement is SO offensive to the working poor, BillHill.
I work in Healthcare and it's the same thing. People bitch and moan about Medicaid, as if we're paying the recipients cash money. Yet, it ensures that the hospitals get PAID and the employees get PAID and don't lose their jobs due to bad-debt write-off getting out of hand. Those of us who rely on tax money for our employers to stay afloat are not getting poor because of anything we did wrong!

I dast not comment on most of what you have to say above.. BUT I have a sister teaching in springfield, Illinois, she recently retired at the age of 52 and her last salary (2012) was $92.000.00 teaching math.... I do not know how much bartenders make where you live, but I would unless they are working as a private one for some millionaire, I doubt that they are getting that much money

One of the biggest problems is giving wealth to other countries for the sake of them being our allies. America not only gives foreign aid to most countries, but to 11 million people here at home, that should not be in this country, America has become soft. Eisenhower had the right idea, send back the illegals and tighten trade and forget foreign aid to all countries. Lets forget foreign aid to all for two years and let other countries fend for them selves.

Hope you don't mind if I agree with you.

Damn- sounds like we should move to Illinois! No teacher's union in SC and lousy school boards make for lesser pay. He's a brand new teacher, hired after school started as a "long-term sub" at @ $9.00/hr!!! WITH all the responsibilities of the "full-time teacher with a classroom of his own." And no benefits. Working 10 hours per day, getting paid for 8. Bum deal. As a bartender, he made as much in 2 eight-hour shifts as he does working full time for a week for the rug rats. I don't know of ANY public school teachers here in SC who make $90K per year! That's awesome.

You have to remember to take into account that his example was a long term teacher, not one just starting out & a "sub" at that. Plus the cost of living there is likely higher, and thus the money doesn't go as far. Let's also not forget Union Dues either. You have to consider all the variables & compare apples to apples, not oranges.....That's what I did when I compared transferring from Maryland to either NJ or Ga...Yeah, the Georgia school system wasn't as good, but a lot of that has to do with parental involvement in their child's education...
