OK guys, get ready for this one,

On Tuesday Jan. 24, 2012 our illustrious politicians are going to vote on a bill, H.R. 3261, that will change the internet like never before.

This bill called the SOPA (stop online piracy) act is designed to protect intellectual (copyrighted) material. Most politicians favor this bill and it will probably pass. This is a windfall for the American lawyer industry and holds sites like YouTube, Google, PayPal and all the others liable for any copyright infringements sent on the internet.

But that's not all. The bill is like the Obama health care bill in that it poorly written leaving a lot of holes for further interpretation; I.E. censorship of anything the politicians decide is "inappropriate" including non-pornographic material they don't like which can be anything.

Goodbye, free internet. Hello richer lawyers and politicians.

Wikipedia.org enter SOPA. Also Google SOPA

The only thing we can do now is write/email/call the congressional seat warmers and voice our opinion...as if that's going to do any good.

Well, as I am neither a plagiarist nor a pedophile, this bill will be of little interest to me. The politicians have nothing better to do all day so they dream up stupid laws that usually end up on some dusty shelf somewhere.
If your hands are clean, don't worry about such activity.

Here's what's bad about, "It won't affect me, I'm not doing anything wrong."

YOU don't get to define WRONG!

OK stupid question... how are they going to police this, the internet isn't an american property, it's world wide.

Most of the people on this forum are too damned old to not know about the "sociopath" affect. Some people get out of bed every morning planning their day around two burning questions, "Who can I hurt? What can I break?" They have sought positions of power just so they can hurt and break. Many are politicians.

No, American law cannot stop the Chinese or the Byelorussians but it's not designed to. YOU are the target, even if you attract attention through no fault of your own.

Stop and think. What have you done, or are doing, on the Internet that they could possibly find wrong?
If there is anyone who feels that this new law will curtail their past, present, or future activities on the internet then shame, shame, on them.

Anyone who worries about laws for the internet has never read the National Healthcare Laws that are already in effect.
Just one example: Page 59 HC Bill, lines 21-24. Government will have direct access to your bank accounts for electronic
funds transfer.

Now, worry about something important. Forget the Internet.

I have not made myself clear and I am certainly more paranoid than you. Nobody can live a life so free of blame that they will never attract the attention of a psychopath. The most extreme examples (fortunately rare) would be people shot in their cars while driving down a highway within range of a sniper.

I have a website focused on gravestone art, my wife's pottery, and some volcanoes in Mexico. As I understand SOPA, somebody could accuse me of piracy through my website and stonecherubs would be shut down until I could appeal the order. I cannot afford to do that, the site would be gone.

Who would object to gravestones, pots, or volcanoes? Somebody! Count on it!

okay fellow shooters, I hear your side of this, makes me ask (Before I go read the bill)

I wonder if this bill will set a ground president to protect us from those who do take our photos and run with them?

It happened to me once (more than that but this was a biggie) where that I was in a Harley dealership open house after shooting comercial photos for their ads. I was wondering around and noticed a lot of people in front of a computer monitor so I naturally went to see what they were looking at.

A third party had right clicked on all my photos and made this video slide show with MY work!

I muttered WTF I thought quietly it just slipped out, the manager heard me and looked immediately took the cd out of the main computer and kept apologizing,,,,,,,,,, I have had a bitter side ever since.

The third party did stop taking my work but the damage had been done.

So could we look at the bill that way of protection?

I have to run to city hall meeting but I will definately check back later

food for thought,,,,

Yes, I agree. You are most certainly more paranoid than I. But then your paranoia is still mild. You haven't yet reached the point to where you are certain that your dog is rabid, or your wife is secretly planning to divorce you, or you are being stalked by the town's lone prostitute,or an airliner is going to fall out of the sky onto your house, or that lady you spoke to in the checkout line is going to charge you with assault.
But then, your world is simply full of worry, isn't it. But thats all right because at 11:11 a.m., on the 21st day of December, in the year of our Lord, 2012, the whole world is coming to it's end. Cross my heart and hope to die if that isn't something worthy of your worry.
