Seems what you are describing (and I think I really want) is the Fuji X100s. There are a few places that rent them.

You could pool your resources and rent with an interested friend like I am going to do soon. There are no dealers near us- the closest is 4 hours away, but at a Joe McNally workshop a few weeks ago, a B&H rep was there with a few cameras... it felt a bit like the old Leica M4 I used to use.
To those who own one, how long does it take to really run it through its paces?

The X100S will do the job nicely and is a great camera. The X100 will too.

The Sigma DP Merrill series of compact fixed lens cameras are popular with the street crowd and take very high IQ images. Each of the DP Merrill's are a different focal length, I believe that there are 3 separate models to choose from.

As far as fixed lenses....not sure what other models there are...but they exist....I just don't know about them.

The Fuji X100 or 100s looks pretty good to me. Anyone have any opinions or suggestions ?
Here's a few shots that I took yesterday in Ocean Grove, NJ.

Edmund - I'm with Goofy and Bob on this, and I think you already know which one you'd like !

I have the Fuji X-E1 with 18-55 and find it's a lot less intimidating than a DSLR for the uses you're describing. But you want a fixed lens, so the X100s seems to fit the bill. I don't know how much more motivation you need to take the plunge, but this is the review from an English user that you may not have yet seen ......

And just to throw another option in for you ...... a few days time will see the launch of the Nikon DF. I'm sure you can do your own research but this appeared on DPReview in the UK just this morning, and since you're already a Nikon user ......

You will certainly need fast focusing. It might be worthwhile taking a look at the Sony NEX-6 or NEX-7.

Google X10/X20 vs X100. You might be surprised. A lot of folks, a few pros, who already shoot DSLR prefer the X10, especially for street work. Amazingly innovative EXR sensor and processor, IQ on par with larger sensors, and faster focus and faster captures than the X100. Wider focal range, just as solid build quality. The viewfinder is merely that, though, no shooting info. But that would've added another couple of hundred bucks to the price.

I bought an X10 used and absolutely love it, especially in low light. Always shoot JPEG on the Velvia setting or B&W. You won't regret it.

I looked at the Fugi x100s, but it's a fixed lens. People love it. I just pre-ordered the new Fugi X-E2 from B&H the lenses are interchangeable and people rave about their lenses.

I have fujifilm HS20 as a second camera. I keep it handy in my car. I am impressed with this camera. It is a bridge camera and very light. My lightest tripod works for this camera.

Check out Valerie Jardin. She's a professional photographer in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She specializes in street photography. And shoots with a Fuji 100s. She has a wonderful blog that you can subscribe to, as well. Good luck.

Take a look at the new micro four thirds Lumix GM1. This should be terrific for street photography. Even though it doesn't have a viewfinder, it is so small that grab shots will be quick, quiet and easy. The kit comes with a matching 12-32 lens.
