Hi just quick question before I make a decision, I'm mostly into portraits, I'm after getting a 70-200 2.8 vr ii, Is this a very good portrait lens plus good or every day shots, I'm using the Nikon D7100, , I know the lens is heavy but still fancy getting one ,, Thanks for any help in advance,,
Jimmy

It's a great lens but remember you'll have a 1.5 crop factor with the D7100. Nikon are doing a cash back scheme at the moment and I think they are offering £80 on that lens.

Definitely! Nothing like that here. If you buy a certain camera with a certain lens, there is a rebate.

Jimmy - don't listen to Cthahn - he's new here, chimes into everything and everyone, obviously wants the world to know about him, has a great big chip on his shoulder, hasn't a good word for most, gives little or no advice, only believes in prime lenses, and is proving himself (can't possibly be a "she"?) to be a whole bundle of trouble on this site.

Glad to hear that you've found the lens for you !

Great sharp lens. The lens that I used most for portraits back in film days was the 105mm. That is the same as 70mm with a DX sensor. Many shooters like to gat back a bit and use a 135, but be careful if you use too long a focal length, you will get flat faces.

No. A prime lens, 60 - 106mm

Everyone knows that the one true portrait lens is the Nikon 135mm 2.8 DC. If you cant recommend the right gear for the right job, dont recommend anything. Thanks!

OP: The 70-200mm VRII is going to be the right tool you will need for more than just portraits, just buy it already.

Musket - I agree in principle with your comments about this member. However, Nikon made a few 135mm f2.8 lenses, but the one with "de-focus control" (DC) is an f2. Wish I had one !

Think also that you'll find that the OP has already told us that he's bought !

I'm 64 years old and shoot alot of sports. If I'm shooting at night or inside the 70-200 is on my D7000. It's heavy but I hand hold it at times for up to 6-7 hours so it's not that bad. Excellent portrait lens which I don't use enough in that genre but there are folks on here that I listen to and those I just skip by. Listen to MT and Capt, they won't steer you wrong especially with Nikon equipment. They are straight to the point W/O trying to show off spitting a bunch of numbers or worthless garble. Enjoy your new lens and hope you can handle the weight..............

Sorry to upstage you coco1964, I'm 67 and carry my 70-200 on my D700 with battery grip all day long with no problem, being such a great lens makes it lighter ;-)

It's strange how that happens, perhaps it's fuelled by desperation ;-)

Absolutely---I shoot for the newspaper and a local sports magazine so if I don't get the shots I don't get paid and that's desperation. Hey guys getting old doesn't mean getting decrepit...........lol

I've just spent two days carrying my kit around a ploughing match in the pouring rain, D700, 70-200, several other fast primes, spare batteries, drinking water etc. I don't get paid but it's good for my soul :-)
