While mowing the grass today I almost ran over this caterpillar. So I got my trusty Sony Handycam, which will take videos or photos, and shot a few photos.

Nice series... I can remember when I was a kid watching those type caterpillar eating away at a leaf... I thought it was pretty neat how they would move its head in a arcing motion when devouring a leaf...

I found it in the yard while cutting the grass in south central NC. Took it to our church school to show the kids and they were amazed. It turns out to be a Luna Moth. I put it in a cup to take to school and within a day or so it had already spun a cocoon. Your never to old to learn.

Luna is a species of silk moth. Silk moth caterpillars look quite similar. The Chinese unravel the spun cocoon to recover the silk for weaving into cloth.
