Lens on the Nikon D3100

Hello friends: Just bought a D3100 with the 18-55 mm lens. As I put on a UV protective filter my hand gripped the end of the lens itself and I could feel a click of the lens, first in one direction, then the other. Is that some kind of setting for the lens?

Is it set to Auto or Manual focus?

if its in AF mode DONT manually turn the focus = broken lens
