I wish I had the chance to learn to use a range finder. That sounds amazing.

you may not like it's to auto for you . there's no trick to them . if you can use what you got , you can use a range finder that's for certain .

I bet your interior shots are very nice indeed. Car to post one using that equipment? Thanks for the information!

I usually keep it around f/5.6 or higher for real estate shots, so focus is ok. Like I said before, most of my still shooting is interior real estate shots using strobes. Usually, I have to cover for a bright window, so shutter goes to 250 and f/5.6 to 7.3 and two YN 560 guns at 1/2 aimed at the ceiling. The camera is on a tripod. I just stand behind it or off to the side, holding my arms up to the ceiling, and fire using a radio control taped to one of the guns. Adjustments are made using f/stop and flashgun power. However, I shoot RAW, so it really doesn't matter. RAW gives you like 13 stops of latitude, but, I like to get the shot pretty visible for editing in PS CS5 RAW.

Really, Mdorn? This is what I call the , "make the newbie feel stupid for working in manual" technique.

no your far from stupid . but you do tend to flaunt it . just be quit about it who cares if you use manual . you don't have to keep telling the world . that to me reminds me of this girl who was 16 , a friend of my daughter . who would tell ever one she met that she could drive a stick shift . her father had
one and told her that he's not letting her get a licence if she can't learn on a stick shift . so in her mind she concord the world , and thinks that she has accomplished what only the select few manage to do . all it boils down to is moves with your hands and fingers . we can all do that can't we . like eating with a fork . I'm pretty good with chop sticks . but this is the first time I have mentioned it in my 72 years on this planet .

Only Newbies that tell old hands that have had a love for photography for 60+ years that they "lost their passion" if they don't use the big M all the time. By the Way the orginal MWAC thought she knew everything too. No one cares if you use Manual all the time but it is a concern that you seem to have little respect for thouse who don't - Dave

man I just got to this page , and I think I told her the same thing a couple pages back . and I also agree with every other things on the pages preceding this page . I guess there is no passion left for us seasoned old been there done that farts. when she gets over the fact of being awestruck about learning
what her camera can do . then maybe she can settle down and take some meaning full pictures . in stead of telling the world how wonder full it is when your stuck in manual . and how you lost your passion and drive for photograph
if your not in manual . I beleive it's a art and it comes in different levels as you progress , I totally have a different out look on it now that I did ten short years ago , and 20 , 30,40 and 50 . but I haven't lost my passion or drive I just don't express it , I don't have to been there done that . like a fine wine gets better with age .

Well for a start at least knightski can write in understandable English and she knows how to use capital letters and punctuation.
I for one find her enthusiasm and keenness to improve very refreshing.
I have seen nightski produce quite a few quality images recently. Show me just one of your photos that is better than her most recent upload here?
I have not seen you produce anything at all Bram boy.
All you have done is regress to the troll stage.
A matter of fact, I'm not even sure if you regressed there, maybe you started there.
Why not give us a look at some of that "fine wine that has supposedly got better with age"?
Are you a "has been", "never was" or a "still is"?
Seems a few of you opinionated self important old farts just don't have the catalogue to back up your "exalted" position.

Did you notice how much technology has got us into trouble, for instance following your GPS that has taken people down the wrong way of a one way street or across railroad tracks where vehicles were not supposed to be and got hit my a train (on the news yesterday), or just take computers and how much technology has both improved and degraded life, bet you never got a virus from the US Mail.

Maybe not a virus, but letter bombs were "popular" in the 70s.

By the way; darn long sentence bro.

Auto mode will give you excellent pictures most of the time.
Program mode will give you more control over what is going on and will give excellent pictures nearly all of the time.

It is the small percentage of occasions that fall outside the 'nearly all of the time' that needs full control.
You can do a lot of extra control from program modes by using the camera controls such as exposure compensation - but you are getting into 'manual' mode then.

Full manual control gives you complete control over your picture and it is down to you to produce a 'perfect' picture or a crap one.

To use manual properly you need to know your controls and have a good knowledge of use of camera and exposure. Probably the best way to learn is to experiment and read so that when you come across a situation where you need manual you will be ready.

The following picture would beat the Auto setting and required either adjusting camera settings or more simply to use the Manual setting.

Auto beater

Here are just 2 reasons why full auto won't get any usable shots. When I mount my old 50mm 1.4 fd canon lens on my 7d it can.t work in auto. I also have a tremor so I must control shutter speed manually on my non is lens. There are times when manual setings are best. Try shooting the moon in auto. Try shooting a waterfall in auto.Try to get motion blur in auto. Those are the first things that came to mind I am sure there are many others.

Darn tootin boberic. The computer in the camera's got
less brains than a fence post 1/2 the time.

If the Nikon FM I shot the late Ayrton Senna with had Auto,
and was used in Auto, the pic would not have looked...
