In external speedlite control menu. Flash sync speed in av mode. Set to 1/200-1/60. auto. This worked for me with a similar problem. I hope this helps.

now my issue is when i put these exact same setting in to the 5D i get the black band this has never happened with the 60D in fact i can shoot the 60D at 1/250 and still not get the band i have to drop the 5D to 0/125 to get rid of it, is this correct or is there a setting i am forgetting about i just find it odd that i can set a higher sync speed on a 60D than on a 5D mk iii. please help....
thanks

When you think about it, what you stated subsequently about sensor size makes sense because the 5D sensor is full sized vs. the 60D sensor (almost twice the size). Therefore, the shutter curtain has to travel almost twice the distance in the 5D. I doubt that the travel speed of the shutter is different in Canon cameras since it's a mechanical thing.

this is a very cryptic reply. the only reason i can see for the black band happening is the difference in sensor size is this what you are trying to say ?

You can not relate the 60D to the 5Dm3 at all. They are so different.
Pick up a good aftermarket book read it and work with the camera several times.

Dave is correct in not referencing or comparing one to the other. I love mine. It's a dream camera. However I keep all accessories Canon so I know they are compatible. Good luck. I think the book I got was by Bryan Peterson. Amazon for about 25.00.us.

A week ago i bought a 5D mk iii once i had finished reading the manual i decided to test it out in the studio. now for the last 12 months i have been using a canon 60D and have mostly used the sames settings in the studio 100 ISO 1/200 F9.0. i use elinchrom flashes and use the elinchrom wireless trigger (EL-skyport speed)

The fasted flash sync (without going into High Speed Sync) is 1/200 sec on the 5D III

The flash sync speed of the 5D is probably optimistically overstated at 1/200 ! - may be 1/160-80 - anyway, you may have to live with it ...

I had a similar problem on the 5D MKII, mine was not consistant-sometimes worked fine, which would lead me to think it was something else.
Then I found the best sync speed to be 1/160... the following has a good test.

I can not access the flash menu as i am not using a canon/compatible flash

Hi Joel, 1st off you don't have to only be using Canon Flashes to access the External Flash menu. I use Yongnuo Flashes & Transceivers through my Canon 6D menu system. It is either your SS is too fast or yes you are in 1st curtain instead of second curtain,

Joe, I'm a day late and usually a dollar short too, but if you are using he EFS lens on the 5D you might be getting the banding from that as it's for the cropped sensor. try the fifty and see if the banding goes away. Just a thought
