Contact the publisher by letter (registered, return receipt requested) and POLITELY remind them that you want a photo credit. That will serve to remind them that you own the copyright. You'll probably get a polite letter in response assuring you that you will receive a credit. The publisher will get the message that they've been put on notice that there is a potential copyright infringement. That could be very costly to them. There is the risk that they'll replace your image with something else, but if you make it clear that you are only interested in a credit, it's an easy thing for them to do.

The OP mentioned that the photo was "soooo altered". First thing that pops into my mind is if it was drastically altered, why does the OP even want his name on it. Secondly, I agree that no publisher wants to deal with a potential copyright infringement, so they will most likely not even use it. However, this puts his friend now into a bind. I still think this was a good lesson for the OP, and he just needs to move on now and plan for next time. At this point, is the friendship worth it? Perhaps it is, but perhaps it isn't?

Hey, just kidding.
You should still get your credit for the photos, after, all, you shot them. I mean, they came from somewhere, no matter how altered they are, they are still yours.

I agree and I think you should take it up to your friend, sounds like he should step in for you (if he is a real friend, he will be upset about it just as you are and do something about it)!

I recently did a photo shoot (portrait session) for a brother magician. I shot this session on location at a local restaurant but in the final work the background was removed. My work was to go towards the publication of his book (series of several books in total). All I asked for in exchange was a by line (credit) for my work. But because my work was soooo altered I don't feel my work will get any credit at all, even though I asked for credit.

The magician is my friend, I even gave him a 13x19 inch print for him to hang on his wall. But I'm pretty sure the publishing company will not be giving me any credit. I can't bring this up to my magician friend because he is my friend and I wish to keep my friendship. So I will not bring this up to the publishing house either. So I will keep my mouth shut.

Has this ever happened to you?

Sorry for the rant. :(

When I was in college, 4 decades ago or so, I did a photo shoot for 4 classmates who formed a gospel group and were publishing a record. They needed a photo for the albumn cover. It was a very low budget affair so all I asked for was $10 for the B&W film and photo paper and a credit on the albumn for the photo, along with a copy of the albumn for me to keep. (At the time I was still toying with the idea of getting into photography as a full time job, but that didn't happen.)

Since the photo shoot was well outside of town on a farm and we all rode out in one stationwagon I also got a supper out of the deal, before we headed back to campus.

When the albumn came out there on the back with all the other information was Photo by and my name. it was off by itself, away from the other information on the back. The group wanted to include so much information that the font kept shrinking to get it all in.

So it turns out that my name was printed in a font about 50% bigger than the names of the singers. We all had a good laugh over that.
