I think being a photographer instantly makes you less cool, so I wouldn't worry about that, it's kind of a done deal, ha ha. So I wouldn't worry about using a strap. I USED to do a sling shoulder strap, much more comfortable. But every now and then I found I would bump the longer lenses into stuff, chairs, table edges (out of sight out of mind I guess). Anyway, I never hit the lens when the camera is in front of me, so I went back.

Personally I could care less if I look cool or not. This past Saturday I hiked 8 miles on the Columbia Gore trail 440 in Oregon. At times the trail was only about 2 feet wide with a rock wall on 1 side and a 300 foot drop on the other. yes my camera strap was around my neck. I, like you have and love what I own and no it is not the best.

Here is a shot from the trail.

So was I cool or smart?

Pappy you were smart and cool. Also lucky to be on that trail doing that shoot. Great shot!!

My new op/tech over the shoulder utility strap looks very cool in camo green.

I find it interesting that we all have our own ideas of what is comfortable. I used a neck strap for several years but, while the camera was well controlled and handy, it hurt my neck after several hours. I then thought sling straps would be workable and went through several - I even designed and made my own. None were exactly what I was looking for whatever reason but they all has one issue in common and that is the camera tended to swing around - the equipment was not very well controlled. I stumbled on a strap from an old computer case and it works perfectly --- for me anyway. I wear it over my right shoulder with the camera hanging on my left hip. By being secured by two camera strap points, it is very secure and the strap is a two inch wide web that is very comfortable. A further plus is the attachment points are very robust and secure; however, when I use the camera on a tripod, they unclip easily and I don't have to worry about the strap being in my way.

The beautiful thing about photography is there are usually several correct ways to solve the problem -- whatever the problem may be.

I generally carry 2 rigs hiking, so one is a sling with the 70-200 lens the other camera over left shoulder under right arm. both cameras are easily accessible and I can jog, well what I can jog, a really brisk walk with out the camera bouncing off my chest.
I near lost a lens running with camera around neck catching a truck ( army deuce and a half, Lens smacked tailgate, filter "took one for the team"0 I also use a lens hood now.

I find that moving around with a camera on chest is un comfy. . With camera under arm it adds a layer of protection and gives up nothing for putting the camera to use.

Joel Sartore an National Geographic photographer always shoots with his around his neck and he's pretty cool. Did you ever think that perhaps some folks just don't know what cool is really all about? Take your young person that wears his belt loops just above his knees for instance, now that's not cool it's just stupid.

Well it looks to me that your not cool if you use the strap that came with the camera,,, I obviously need to have a sling, harness, holster or something to be cool. I've been walking around for 40 years looking like a goose !
What's out there that is just a replacement for the original that connects to the original strap mounts that is more padded for comfort that doesn't cost a fortune, I'm interested in trying something,
thanks,
Cheers !

Checkout the Ezeestrap it is more comfortable and the camera does not bounce like it does with a neck strap.

I just read an article on 7 tips to make you a cooler photographer, and the very first one says to avoid wearing your camera strap around your neck unless you have a desire to look incredibly uncool.
I have to strongly disagree with that. I worked hard and long to save up enough money for my camera, lenses, and other equipment, and although it's not "top of the line", to ME it's very precious. If I were to drop it due to not wearing the strap around my neck, and that caused partial or complete loss of the use of my camera, it would be a long time before I could buy another. So, I don't care HOW I look when I walk around with my camera, I'd rather feel that my camera is secure than to take any risks.

Do YOU carry your camera using the strap around your neck?
I just read an article on 7 tips to make you a coo... (show quote)

It depends on the camera. Some of my cameras would break my neck.
