Eastman is doing great, Kodak isn't-the problem is management.

The rot set in when they passed over Carl Kohrt, an engineer with a background in the business, and appointed a salesman as CEO instead. A mistake they have since repeated, twice. There are some great people at Kodak, the best in the business. Unfortunately, they're not in charge.

Cheers,

R.

Cheers,

Isn't that the way a lot of big business work? The right man gets passed over, and the mistake is never brought out in the open until it's to late.

I paid over $5,500 for my first digital camera back in 1994, maybe 1993. It was a Kodak and had a whopping 1MP. When it finally died in 2003, the camera store wanted $250 just to diagnose what was wrong with it. There sitting on their counter were 20 new digital cameras, all for less than $250, and all with 5MP or more. I guess you know what I did.

Kodak's biggest problem was they got involved in to much and lost their A.. Camera people do not belong in the drug business. Rochester NY will suffer greatly without Kodak.

Hello from Kodak country.........you're right getting involved in other stuff like the drug business. Salesmen........the corruption of any company. I don't think Kodak will totally disappear once they go into Chapter 7 but because of being in the digital age there will be a lot of employee downsizing and re-education. They've already let a lot people go and tore down some of their buildings. Kodak depended to strongly on it's reputation and it's name and waited too long to really go digital even tho they got it started. Kodak will never die but it will never be a world reknown name again either. When you really look at Kodak management history, it would almost make you think there was some implanted corruption going on.

That is really sad news. My first camera was a Kodak box camera and Kodak film. Even had a little home darkroom where I made contact prints, using all Eastman Kodak chemicals and Kodak paper. Then graduated to a Kodak Signet 35mm which I used for years until moving on to a Pentax K1000. First digital camera was a Kodak Z740 which I still use and love.

Hate to say it but my undertanding is Kodachrome is already gone. Maybe Paul Simon can redo the song with "Mama don't take my megapixels away"

Just finished reading a sad story in the Wall Street journal about the possible filing of Chapter 7 for KODAK. It is hard to believe a giant in our photography history could be in its final days. A lot of our younger people did not get the chance to experience the film side. KODAK was the king, from cameras, film and darkroom chemicals.

I joined the digital revolution about 10 years ago. I was a Pentax believer during my film SLR days. When I decided it was time for new toys I turned to KODAK. I had 2 KODAK digitals before moving on to NIKON.

I do miss the days when I was locked in the bathroom developing film or printing photos, I would here the knock on the door and someone shouting “Hurry up I need to go”.

I'm not sure if this a true story or not, due to I don't trust the magazine I read it from, but at one point back in the mid 80's, Steve Jobs went to Kodak with an offer to let them in on the new idea he had. As the story goes, the management leaders fell asleep during the presentation. You always have to keep your eyes open to new possibilities....

I started with a kodak DC-50 moved to a DC-260 and then on to a DC-265. Kodak then announced they were getting out of the semi pro camera business.
I move on to an olympus E-1 and then to a Nikon D-300.

One other really sad point is that they want to not have to pay retired employee's their benefit's as part of the chapter 7. This is the real crime.

Kodak is going into Chapter 11, They are trying to determine ways to reorganize and re-think the company as a whole. People tend to forget that they are not just the essence of Photography as we have all none. They are in Medial, Dental, Photography, as well as chemicals used in several other industries. It started this process a couple of years ago by divesting it's self of it's Dental product group. I am confident that the name and importance of Kodak in all of it's other fields will continue to be an important part of our economy.
