I've been to Maine several times, always sticking close to the coast. A friend and I are heading up that way the middle of next week to chase down some fall color. If anyone knows of a special place not right along the coast, please let me know. Also, any suggestions on places to stay would help. We aren't looking for a tent, but since we plan to shoot sun up to sun down, we only need a place to crash, in other words we aren't looking for a Hilton.

We live on Tricekey Pond - Naples, ME. You've got The Lakes Region, lots of scenery with still lots to do until the end of October. Research motels for your needs. Of course, don't forget about Portland Light, Casco Bay, Wells, etc. great place to eat in Wells - The Fisherman's Catch. We ALWAYS get fried oysters, scallops and big belly clams. Lots to see and do.

WOW, I like the replies. I plan to save this Q&A session and make the trip myself, but include the coast too. The autumn color is already well begun, and it will only last a short while though. Vermont and New Hampshire - White and Green Mountain areas - are extremely attractive too.

My mom just got back from Baxter state park. Said amazing. I'm going to go next summer.

The leaves are just starting to turn in the Old Town area. I drive up route 2 along the Penobscot River every day, it is a beautiful drive. You can continue along rt. 2 up to Lincoln or Mattawamkeg and then turn toward Millinocket and Baxter State Park. Plenty of places to stay in the Millinocket area. Enjoy!!
