Thanks but I think I will still go for Canon EF 400mm at the moment. I forgot to say I do have one lens that isn't a Canon that I use for landscapes and it is a Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 and it is great, highly recommend it.

Thanks for the input about the review - have just read it and it does sound good - photography sure is an expensive hobby but what fun it is. Thanks again.
Trish, I use the 400mm f/4 DO IS L lens and love it. I also have a 500mm f/4 IS L lens and rarely use it any more. It 400 is half the weight, focuses a fast, is just as sharp and as durable!!! I shoot wildlife at Bosque del Apache in NM, Costa Rica, Alaska, etc and find the 400 a joy to travel with. I use it with the 1.4X and find no problems. Great lens!!! See my website for examples: naturephotoworks.com
Rent it for a short experience and you'll probably want to buy one. My best, J. Goffe

Thanks for your comments but can I ask what camera you use it with please? Thanks.

Trish, My favorite is the 7D ... but I also use the 5D MkII, the 1D MkIV, and the Rebel 300 when I feel like proving it's not the camera body. Best, J. Goffe

Thanks, I just wanted to confirm that you used it with the 7D. Appreciate your time and comments.
Thanks for your reply. I think it's amazing what you do with Elements 5 and shooting in JPEG. I would expect a reply of RAW and Lightroom to achieve your results. BTW, is there any particular post process function you attribute to the detail ; i.e, unsharp mask, etc? I have fooled around in Element10, Canon Photo Professional and can't seem to get what I would like relative to what you do.
I stand corrected. Its the 400 F5.6 that the extender will not work with. Two very different lenses.

Great comments and much appreciated. The reason I am looking at the Canon 400mm with an extender is that a friend who also uses a 7D tried the Sigma 500mm and was not happy with it so that is why I am trying to get as much info from people who have used the lens as possible. I do appreciate your comments.
Here are a few photos taken with the 500mm lens. All have been very heavily cropped because they were taken from about a 1/4 mile away. The last shot was taken using the Tamron 1.4X TC.
My suggestion to you would be to buy a copy from Adorama or B&H and try it. You will have 30 days to return it to them.

Very nice - thanks for showing me.
Here are two more of a Tern flying using the Sigma 500mm and a Tamron 1.4X TC. If I remember right they were about 50 yards away. Terns really can fly fast!

Thanks - which body are you using?

All these photos were taken using the 7D, same as you are using.

Interesting as my friend didn't care for it at all, said it wasn't sharp enough. Thanks for your input.
At this focal length, focus calibration and using a good support are HIGHLY desireable - still, the next best thing weight wise and bulk to the DO is the 300 2.8 !

How old was his lens? As I stated earlier Sigma has made big improvements the last two years in the quality of their glass and lenses.
The other thing many don't like is the size and weight. I weighs about 7 pounds. Even though I do shoot this freehand quite often it is best to use a tripod because of its size and weight. A remote release also is a good idea.
For your info though, the eagles were shot that way. All the others were shot freehand. I couldn't track the terns with a tripod, they were too fast!
