A lot of time you can open the case and it is just a regular drive. If that is the case you can install the drive in your computer and access it that way.

The drive is totally dead. So how would I get access to the files?

I have been a follower of this wonderful site for quite a while now and have learned so much. But now I find myself with a problem and would appreciate your advise.

My Seagate 4TB external drive failed during a backup to CrashPlan. So the recovered files include only the .xmp from LR4 and about 188 images, leaving about 4500 images lost. Seagate will charge $400. to recover the drive. I only need the 4500 images and feel very unhappy to have to pay that much. Any advise on how to recover these images? I have formatted all the cards, but only one has been overwritten. Seagate offers a DYI plan to try to recover them myself with a 45 page manual and then $99. fee for the key to unlock the images. The problem there is that the card that was overwritten has my only pics of Victoria Falls that I really want to recover. So, besides being very upset, I'm also confused and would appreciate suggestions and advise. Does anyone know a less expensive, easier way of recovering these images?

Thanks in advance,
Karen Celella from LI, NY
