We have used very heavily both the 18-200, as well as the 18-105 (both 3.5-5.6) and have been very impressed by each. My wife Judy and I have used them for years, first in our wedding work in the DC area, and now for location and studio portraiture and during our photo workshops in Maine and in Italy.
The 18-200 is my money lens and I rarely take it off my now-battered D300. Judy's 18-105 came as the kit lens on her D90. Though I love my lens, I believe the 18-105 is an even SHARPER lens than the 18-200. We also have never had an issue with the plastic mount. It is a superb, reasonably-priced, lens that I think you will be very happy with.
Good shooting,
Frank Van Riper

I got the 18-105 as a kit lens with my D7100. I have other lenses but like RetiredPhotog this is still my everyday lens and is mounted 70+% of the time. From flower close-ups to distance landscapes it's worked well.

This post is about the 18-105; not what lenses we use!

<<<tired of swapping lens between the stock 50 and the 70-200mm.>>>

That was my thinking when I bought the Nikon D5000 and the 18-200 zoom. I work in the desert next to a sand-sea. My images were disappointing to say the least and I replaced that lens with the 24-85 which is much sharper.

So many people with the 18-200 love it so I suspect I got one of the production models on the bad side of the bell curve.

Canon SX 50 hs, 24-1200mm, one lens, no changing, relatively compact. Very versatile, less the $400 comes ready to shoot. Limited accessories, not much needed, except an added battery.
I bought a Joby camera strap, which I now use as a sling for my left arm cast, but that is another story, but at least it has been found for another useful tool.
