My husband shot this image 10 yrs ago with a Nikon FG, 50 mm f4 on 400 speed film with a 15 second exposure at 4:30 in the morning. This is the East Jordan & Southern Engine #6. Both images are the same.

Both nice shots, I favor the B&W. I too had a Nikon with a fixed 50mm & a fixed 300mm. No zoom back than.

Chuckle's image was shot ten years ago. There were zooms ten years ago. I can even state for a fact that there were zooms back in 1978 since I bought one. However, it was for a Canon camera. Maybe Nikon is 25 years behind the times?..........lol

Naw, it's a Northern 4-8-4 used on the Sante Fe for passenger service in the forty's and fifties. It was stored as a display engine at the Sante Fe shops in San Bernadino shops for many years. I even have pics of it in static display. Boy, were weI surprised one day to find it missing. I thought, "either some vandals wanted it for scrap iron, or maybe someone was rebuilding it". Well, it's rebuilt and running in LA. But not often enough for me!

Thanks Bill I can see now its a 4-8-4. The BigBoy looks like they put two togather with one cab. Its one big hunk of iron.

Hal,This is a picture of a Big Boy. It is on permanent display in Pomona, Ca at the fairgrounds. BTW, the largest operating steam locomotive is the 3985 Challenger on the UP. It's a 4-6-6-4. I have to check my archives for a shot of this locomotive. I have a picture of it at the Steamfest back inb the 90s. I just have to get it out. I'm in process of putting all or most of my slide onto my computer. I already have about 1500 on it now with about another 5000 to go. I'm using a Canon 9000F Mark II for this and it seems to working just fine.

A Big Boy indeed!!! 4000 series on display at Pomona Fairgrounds in CA.

Gobuster, neat shots of the "Amcrash". Notice the gold-tinted windows in the cab. My company built those windows and yes, it is a gold film that is used not for sun tinting, but for de-icing the windows during snow or sleet. Cool. They are powered off the 72 volt aux. power system in the loco. Neat trivia for your next Trivial Pursuit game.

Thanks Bill. Your right the big boy was a 4-6-6-4. Im just starting to scan mine. Ive only done about 200 or more out of about 4000. And Ive scaned even less of my B&W 35mm negs.. Im the cheif cook and bottle washer since my wife has taken ill. I only can grab a short time on the computer. Ive been scanning mine on an Epson V500. You can onlt do 4 at a time. I should have got the one that dose 12.

Great story Hal,

I remember my mother used to bring my dad to work on Saturdays, because we only had one car. The big joke was will we be able to beat the Budd car in a race along RT 8 near Naugatuck, CT.
