Hello, I'm very new to photography I purchased my first dslr only three months ago. In this shot I tried to create dramatic light indoors, I'm curious for opinions, critizism and any helpful hints or tips!

If you post your settings and setup, it is easier to give you help. Off hand I'd say the skin tone is a little cool. She is a cutie, tho, and will make a great model for you to practice with. ;-)

Thanks photo man! I've been going through many tutorials but its hard to decipher which useful and which are just clogging my brain with irrelevant info! Any particular sites you suggest?

Photog 8,
I set up a black backdrop at a forty five from the window, I set up one light (without umbrella) to intensify shadows. I was shooting at 18mm, f/3.5, iso 400, no flash. And thank you she fancies herself a model already ;)

There are so many good sites. Some of my favorites are DPS, Strobist, lightstalking....the list goes on.

Here is an interesting article listing the top websites for photographers; DPS and strobist are on the list.

One of the most important first lessons for any new dslr owner is the exposure triangle. Sooner or later, someone will recommend "Understanding Exposure" by Brian Pettersen.

Good luck in your photographic journey.

Try DPS (Digital Photography School) tutorials - all are useful at one time or another - different strokes for different people = great photo spectrum.

In my HO, I am NOT an expert by any strech of the imagination, BUT you need to step back a little and not cut off the top of her head.

Thank you photo man and hlmichel, I will definitely look into those!
Joe, you are certainly right I'm to close. She is a squirmy 5 year old and gave up right as I got to the point of content with my settings, this was my only shot with these settings!
