In doing house clean up, I came across my brother's old Minolta XE-7 film SLR with a Tokina 28-200 zoom and an Auto Promaster 1:2.8, f=135mm lens.

My brother doesn't want them back. We are having a garage sale this weekend. Should I just let it all go for a couple bucks or is it really worth something?

Why not donate it to your local high school camera club?

The old Minolta film cameras were pretty good in its day, in quality comparable to Canon or Nikon models. I use the slightly older Minolta SR-T 201 occaisionally myself. If you are thinking of dabbling in film photography, the XE-7 is an excellent choice, assuming it is still funtioning. But as far as I can tell, they don't really fetch great sums in today's market if you were thinking of selling it.

A wise man once told me "You never sell guns, gold, or camera equipment"

I have never had much of any of the above, but I have sold cameras I wish I had kept. As long as you have it, why not run a roll of film thru it and see what you REALLY have?

Couldn't hurt.

put fresh batteries in it and shoot it.
Value on used 35mm gear is depressingly cheap I bought( Canon F1, winder, 2 lenses ,50 and 135 gorgeous optics) all in very nice condition 150 bucks.

Worth a few gallons of gas if everything works as it should, and clean.

Thanks for the suggestions. Rather than get peanuts for what is really a decent camera, I am giving it to my son and he seems to feel about it the way I would probably feel about a '64 Mustang. Old but classic and still very cool.

According to ebay, you'd be lucky to get $50 for it. It's too new to make an interesting display piece.

I recently bought a bunch of old cameras to incorporate them into a lamp - work in progress. If you plan to shoot film, keep it and use it. Otherwise, it's just taking up space. I have kept one film SLR, "just in case." All the others earned me money on ebay.

I've been picking up film cameras at various places... goodwill, garage sales, etc. and selling them on eBay for 10-12 years now for good profits.

The XE-7 was a very popular and somewhat sought after model in it's day. Currently selling, clean, body only, in working condition for $35 to $70, depending on your feedback and how good a listing seller you are.

If you are going to "garage sale" it, you'll get offers of $5-15 from someone who does what I do.

I wouldn't be surprised but what half of the people you see at garage sales are turning some tidy profits selling your old stuff bought for pennies.

The lens is not much. In fact, if I had the lens and that body, I would NOT list the lens. That lens would draw down the interest in the body and detract from the best price. I might throw it in the box when I ship it, but it would NOT appear in the listing. It shows use of the camera by a very non professional person.

I think it uses readily available batteries as well. SHOOT IT. Get a good ROKKOR 50mm f1.4 and you'll be surprised when it outshoots your digital darling.

After all, it is "REAL" full frame, you know?

When I want really sharp images in great color, I shoot Velvia 50 in a film camera.

There is a resurgence of interest in film, and prices for the good old ones are rising. Our local Community College film class is full every quarter. Donating such a camera to a film class to loan out to students of film... Young and Old, is a good thing.

I have an x-700 that I bought 30 some years ago along with a box of decent lenses. I still shoot slide film once in awhile and it is great camera. I have a slide scanner but processing is getting harder to find and more expensive. I would keep it if I were you. It is a "full frame" camera. You can still get great film for it.

I have an XE 7 as well as a couple of SRT101 and a Rokkor 1.2 lens. Had the same experience at a brief time when I thought of selling it. So I think about $ 50 sounds correct, but I might check WorthMonkey.COM for price to be certain. I prefer to keep mine and will display it just for the story.

If my memory is serving me efficiently, the XE-7 was the reason for the Law Suit by Leica against Minolta. Modern Photography magazine had ran a story where the striped down the Minolta and the Leica reflex camera that Minolta was building for Leica, and the Magazine stated that it matched part of part, except that te Leica had a changeable view finder. Leica cancelled the contract with Minolta and won the suit in court. I managed to get mine before they were pulled.

Clarify???

Rokkor..

1:2... value...not a lot.

However a Rokkor 1:1.2 Perhaps $200. Minolta fast Rokkors are highly desirable for using with adaptors on Digital DSLR and Mirrorless. HUGE Glass front element on the 1:1.2.

Re: Minolta/Leica..... Minolta have quite a few contracts with Leica. The Leica Minolta CE, the Leica CL, The Leica R SLR, PLUS a lot of glass for Leica.

Minolta was Leica's "Go To" company for a few years, for Leica lesser products to be "branded" Leica.

Many people purchased Leica's and got Minolta's.

Rokkor was Minolta's lens brand. technically it's a f/1:1.2 and is manual focus/aperture. I th Xe 7 came with a 50mm f1:1.4 auto aperture lens
