With the range of lenses you have The 55-300 would be my pick. I use an 18-105 as my one lens one camera choice.

If you were going to carry a camera all day and you wanted to go with the least amount of gear possible what would you carry? I have the following D3100, 18-55 kit, 55-300 kit, 35mm 1.8 and 50 mm 1.8.
Thank You

I didn't see anyone recommend the 18-55mm, so I'll go with that. I like wide rather than tele, so I'd prefer having an 18mm rather than a 55mm as my widest focal length. Unless I were shooting long distances in dim light, I'd be satisfied with the 55mm limit of that lens.

I use a 28-300mm as my standard, but I also like my Tokina 16-28mm.

Yes, I recommended the 18-55 as well, at least for a Disney trip. Other than that, I think the lens choice should represent the task.

Great site isn't it.
So many people on here can't read.
You specifically mentioned that you did not want a recommendation of what lens to buy, you specifically mentioned that you wanted a rcommendation of which of your own lenses to carry.
And lo and behold, you get recommendations of a whole list of other lenses that you do not have.
Maybe they just don't understand english?

The one lens for 1 year - what a toss. Its a stupid idea. Maybe we could tie our left wrist to our right knee for a year as well and see if we can make do like that as well. That would force us to be creative too!

My advice on what lens to carry - the 18-55 zoom.

Use your 35mm f1.8, and use your legs for your zooming!

Happy shooting and good luck!

With your options I'd take the 18-55 every time. It is a good lens and quite versatile.

You definitely don't want more than one totally connected thing at Disney. Some of the rides have lockers you can put your stuff in but that gets to be a hassle.

But start saving your money for the 18-300. Then you can work on getting rid of most of the other stuff. Nikon had it on sale early this year and my wife snapped one up for $699 after she saw my 28-300. She loves it.

I like to take my camera everywhere with me but don't want to carry all my gear. Not interested in buying a new lens at this time I am happy with the range I currently have. I have tried P&S, they are great but I really want to learn more about how to use my DSLR. Also I find it hard with most P&S to compose good shots in bright daylight with the screens. Recently heard someone talk about attaching 1 lens to your camera and leaving it there for 1 year as a great learning exercise. Not sure I want to go that extreme but I sounds like a fun idea. At the end of the month I am traveling to Disney so I will want my Camera with me all the time. But don't want to carry all 4 lenses as what ever I take will likely have to be with me all day long. Carrying that much gear takes the fun out of it.

So if you are going off for a day with no particular shoot in mind. What would you carry?

I would love to hear your suggestions

Thank You

What you write makes great sense... about carrying all your gear - I'm sure none of us like that.

My go to, and always on my Canon is the 28-200. It's fast, sharp and 99% accurate... in other words an excellent lens.
That I would carry around at Disney. Wide enough for most things with 200mm if I want it.

Being out all day I'd probably wear my vest as well for extra batteries, cards, a lens brush for quick dust offs, etc. I would also carry my dslr video view finder to shoot that video I might find interesting.

Good luck

Hello,
Since I moved into the 24MP Nikon and the 18-270mm lens.
I have been getting nothing but compliments on the sharpness of my images. Which means more sales.
I find the 18-270mm is attached full time to my primary camera and my 2 backup camera bodies do the lens rotation if needed.

I have a Canon FF camera as well as the 60D, the 50SX, and the G1. Have have several Canon L lenses of which I love. When walking around all day or wanting not to tote weight but still give me everything I want I put my Tamron 18-270mm lens on my 60D and have everything I could possible need.

Put the 50mm on the camera and go out and shoot. You can always crop and adjust in post processing.

Yes, a lot of them are. But that is normal.
Have a superficial glance at the question, and then answer as if their version of superzoom is the obvious answer.

I agree that a 35mm on your D3100 (equivalent to a 50mm "normal" lens on a full frame) is a great prime/main/one lens choice. It will also force-teach you to move around in framing and composition. For a little more flexibility (and if you can afford it) get a Nikon 16-85mm DX.
