I wish shops here allowed people to have cameras free for a month

Hey JR1, here, if you buy something from Best Buy, you have 30 days to return it with no questions asked. I bought a Canon Sx40, it didn't really fit what I wanted and took it back on the 30th day. They were fine with it. Cheers.

Stick with Adorama or B&H. The sales people are knowledgeable and helpful, unlike the sales people at Best Buy. Also, they are very professional when it comes to returns.

It is not all great.

It used to be that we could go to stores, try cameras and then buy them. We can't do that anymore.

Our retail system has changed. The large selection of products, the wide discussion of them on the internet and the growth of web stores we "buy on line". Local specialty stores of all sorts are gone.

There is still a cost. It has to do with how returned merchandise is handled and it has to be built into the retail price somewhere.

Most of the local stores are gone. One big one, Future Shop, is gone. Best Buy is having trouble because shoppers stop long enough to try a camera and go home for bargain pricing on the internet.

In our choice as consumers to stop spending at local stores, we have become reliant on massive retailers like Walmart, Costco and Amazon -- all with online systems and impressive return policies.

Amazon is working on penetration into the clothing market. Knowing the need to "try things on" they are experimenting with the idea of shipping multiple sizes KNOWING you will return two of the three things you bought. Return labels and authorization are in the original box!

We, the shopping public, created this situation, by valuing the price above all else: personal contact, customer service, etc. I purchased my DSLR from a local brick and mortar shop. The last time I went in to check out a used lens-- the salesperson noticed a smudge on my lens. He cleaned it. It's the small things we miss. We complain about jobs going overseas-- but that's who we buy from. The value of a dollar spent locally stays in the local community diminishing over time. The dollar spent elsewhere does nothing locally.

You missed my point which is that the new retail model is better than the old one. Perhaps I didn't make it very well!

I'm one that values customer service! The online service and selection my wife and I get from Amazon, B&H, Sierra Trading Post and LL Bean is over the top. I get their great selection and service without having to drive anywhere or find parking.

My comment was a general one-- not directed at you. I've done a fair amount of reading on the value of a dollar that stays local. It is this principle that has a far greater impact on our local economies. In a nutshell: a dollar spent locally, is re-spent locally (at least the first time!); a dollar spent else-where contributes in the same way to that overseas-- or out of state economy. Since I'm involved in the procurement process (millions), this economic principle interests me. There are, however, free trade agreements/international & interstate commerce laws that restrict the procurement process. One cannot, for example, eliminate a buyer, strictly on country or state of origin. In my personal life, I am aware of how my buying practices impact local jobs and businesses. That's really all I'm saying. Yeah, I know I went off on a tangent...

I am considering returning my recently purchased camera to Adorama (within the 30 days period). Does anyone have experience returning products to them? How particular are they with original inserts in packaging? I had large bubble packing material which either lost air or was popped to reduce space in our garage. I can certainly package the returned item well.

Any thoughts or past experiences with Adorama returns would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

On Adorama's policy on returns... I would ask why are you returning this camera? Is there some flaw in the equipment?
Doesn't it work properly? What? That will probably govern their policy on your return.

I have done quite a lot of side-by-side test shots between my NEX 5n, Nikon D300 and D7000 with various lenses. One important factor not mentioned here yet is that the Sony tends to have more aggressive in-camera jpeg sharpening applied compared to Nikon defaults. This does give the initial impression that the NEX has sharper images sometimes. Play around with the sharpening settings in the Nikon before deciding to return it. Better yet, compare using RAW files from each camera.

Also, a comment to follow up on all of the VR discussion...
Interestingly, while doing these tests I have occasionally forgotten to switch off the VR while the camera was on the tripod, so I would turn it off and reshoot the exact same scene/setup. Even when blown up to 100% and trying to be critical, I couldn't tell the difference between "VR On" and "VR Off" shots. I suspect it might make a difference with different shutter speeds, but not the middle ranges that I was using.

I began a purchase relationship with Adorama in 2002.
Most recently, I bought a "demo" lens from them and they shipped me a used one.
Getting my money back was really a headache and there was no one who really took ownership to expedite the issue.
IMHO, Adorama is not the easiest company to deal with, and that given the 11 year relationship, really makes me sad.
They seem to have forgotten the retail axiom,
"Customer retention is far less expensive than customer acquisition."

They do hassle you a little bit. I stopped buying from them years ago because their overall store attitude started sucking bad. Now I only buy from B&H. They are the coolest and hassle free...

Correct and if we were to back up and read this thread carefully, it'd seem that the OP had the VR on while testing on the tripod...which would likely be the cause of the softness in the pictures that were taken in the test...maybe nothing wrong with the camera at all...am I missing something here?

That is my conclusion as well.

As I noted I had a D5100 and still feel I was able to take sharper pics with it than its successor D7000 and now D800. My wife still has the D5100 and continues to take super sharp photos with it. IMHO sharp photos are usually more about technique than either camera or lens.

I think the OP was on the right track doing a comparison and seemed to rightly conclude that the photos with the D5100 on a tripod with VR on weren't so hot.

Do you have a suggestion as to which camera would be a good fit with my Leica M lens. I am waiting for an M240 and am W/O a camera. I have 3 M lens and 4 R's suggestions?
