Hey... I just wanted to show photographers what could be done! Please don't bust my chops for a pretty neat photo process.

This picture was taken with a camera 70,000 x 30,000 pixels (2100 MegaPixels).
These cameras are not sold to the public and are being installed in strategic locations. ( This is in Canada somewhere).

It can identify a face in a multitude.
Place the cursor in the multitude of people and left double click a couple times. It will continue to show the people much closer, when you double left click again. or click more if needed. Amazing!!
You will see the image amplify and discover with an incredible sharpness the faces.
There were thousands of persons and yet one can spot and recognize any face, plus a fair amount to facial recognition is also in place.
Imagine what this means… both police and army have it.

To be accurate it is not one camera. The image is made up of 216 separate exposures stitched together. I have managed to stitch forty-two images to make a 180 degree panorama taken from the "Q1" building in Surfers Paradise. I took my old laptop nearly thirty minutes and I saw smoke coming out of the USB ports near the finish.

This is certainly the image to remember of that game - the aftermath is still being played out in the courts.

If you look carefully, there are also signs that the whole consists of images stitched together, you could make it a challenge "how many mis-alignments can I find?"

Hi Esther,
You can also find people in different places at the same time. This is one reason there so many people in the picture.
There are also people with legs but no bodies and bodies with no legs.

"It must be true! I saw it on the internet!" Remember that commercial with the girl and her "French" boyfriend? I saw it before too and believed it about the "Super Camera" But if you divide 2100 megapixels (size of total photo) by 216 (number of stitched together photos) you get 9.7 megapixels, which would mean I could do better with my 24 megapixel Nikon. Theoretically. I do believe super cameras exist as spy satellites for example, and hey, the Hubble Telescope, is one!

Yes, and bodies without legs, and vice versa.

I notice their use of the word "spy" in that article - a highly overused word.

The link shows that it is a Gigapixel product. Why do people go to the conspiracy notion so quickly? I would be interested in the camera and lens used and how quickly these set ups can move. I am surprised at the individual detail and the lack of obvious movement distortion.
The product is on display at a large camera store in Melrose MA so it can’t be too secret.
A thread on this product could be interesting.

I think looking at the gigapan image, and then reading this article, I wouldn't put too much faith in the "correctness" of this article. In fact, I'd put it down to "fear-mongering" and downright misleading information.
The photo on http://www.gigapixel.com/image/gigapan-canucks-g7.html is "the real thing" - I know the area very well, and posted many a letter at that post-office (the building on the right).
If you want to verify, look up Hamilton & Georgia Streets in Vancouver, BC, on Google Earth.

If you want to learn more about this process and view an incredible image (16gigapix, 1920 photos) of Machu Picchu, go to http://www.gigapixelperu.com/Welcome.html
Besides the image there are links to all the info about the equipment and process used. Really impressive.
