I rented a jeep and headed to Hana. Then I went beyond Hana!
You can circle the island. Beyond Hana there are some wicked cliffs with no railings. I don't know if they still let you take rented vehicles there. I did it in 1984. Put yourself on the cliffs beyond Hana at sunrise and be prepared for a spectacular view.

I circled the island in June......on a Harley. We (the wife and I) took the road to Hana and wanted to go as far as Charles Lindbergh's grave.....but the turn off wasn't marked and we just ended up going all the way around. Don't think the Harley dealer would be happy to know that I took his bike in the "forbidden zone". I was amazed at how fast you go from lush rainforest to an arid desert climate.

spending 5-10 thousand dollars to shoot a sunrise....is really not worth it..especially when you can see the same thing anywhere...a sunrise is a sunrise..PERIOD

It's not everyday that one gets to experience a sunrise from above the clouds and in a place who's name means "House of the Sun".

Can't do that in Puerto Rico.....can you!?!

What no underwater camera? Lots of affordable ones out there. Just thought you might be in the water at some point. Check out the Olympus TG-2. Just a thought. I love the diving and snorkeling in Hawaii.

It's the same on the Big Island taking the Saddle Rd from west to east - also a forbidden road for rentals. Although with it being rebuilt, that restriction should be lifted.

We're flying to Maui (staying in Kehei) for 13 days (10 actual days on the island)...I'm taking my Canon 5DIII, lenses all Canon (17-40L, 24-105L, 100L macro, 100-400L), chargers/batteries/cards/clean underwear, blah blah blah.
My question is....anyone who's been there or lives there, are there any special spots/shots/views I should try to find outside the normal tourist realm? Also, ya think I should take my infrared converted Canon 50D?
Never been out of the states,.....thanks for any help.. :-)

All of the suggestions are right on. The eucalyptus was taken at a botanic gardens just before the Kenae Peninsula on the road to Hana. Many beautiful plants, waterfalls, etc. on the road to Hana. Can't miss on anywhere on Maui. A hike in the crater will give you some amazing shots. If you had gone in the winter, you are guaranteed shots of whales. Enjoy and remember, Hawaii is also a state. They don't appreciate saying that you came over from the states. Just a tip.

Thank you all for the hints and tips. I read them all to my wife and she took notes... :-)
I'm quite used to carrying the 100-400, so I think I'll take that and the 24-105. And the infrared 50D.
My sister owns the condo we'll be staying in, so it is rent free.....that'll give us the extra spending money...Woot Woot!!

Mahalo,
Bob

Keep a close eye on your stuff…don’t flash expensive gear in lobbies or bars …don’t assume locking stuff up in your car is ‘good enough’….yours truly, “Cleaned out in Makaha”…

Thanks! I'm pretty good about keeping a low profile....I'll keep it a bit lower on this trip... :-)
