I use their APP for my ipad and iphone. Gives you something to do when the preaching gets boring.

Would the 1.8 be a better choice for this application?

On our cameras, the 50 1.4 has a sweet spot at 5.6. That would give you almost 6 1/2 feet of total depth of field. You could now have your group two deep.....if you're shooting with an DX camera and 10.2 feet if you are using FX cameras.

Creakj: I have a comparable 50mm F1.2. The images are terrific. If shooting a group, you need a little room, because 50mm may put you a bit too close to get everybody into the shot, depending on how large the crowd is, and how big the room in which you are shooting.

My first good camera was a Minolta XD11 with a 50mm 1.4 and I shot everything from macro to groups with it. I didn't have another lens the first year. It's a great lens and I still have the thing. Like they say. If you pay attention to the f stops you will get good pics. Just practice and you'll know what to do when the money shot is there...

If I am not incorrect, I believe the only lens that Ansell Adams used was a 50mm. I think I heard it somewhere. And look what he did.

Very nice. What would be even better would be if someone would design a portable cardboard DOF calculator based on that chart. We've all seen things like that before for figuring MPG, avg speed, etc. You have cut-out windows on the top card, with inserts underneath for setting aperture, etc.

When I get it designed, patented, and produced, I'll let you know.

I'm not using full frame cameras, so if I am shooting at 100mm, do I enter 100 or 150mm?

I figured it out. I enter the camera and the focal length, and the program knows if it is full frame or not. 100mm for a D700 has a different DOF than a D7000 at 100mm.

Great! I'd better get working on these.

Actually, I think the best I could do is make up a chart of some kind for my own cameras. The online program looks pretty complex - so many cameras, etc.

I'll have to look for that app.

If you find your camera, the calculator takes the crop into consideration. If you can't find your camera, pick one that is similar.
