I have a question. If you focus on the closest object and the main subject is behind the object (ex. swan in back of high grasses), will the subject still bein focus.

Answer: Most likely not. It all comes down to your apertue setting. I'll try to give you a visual example here. Immagin that the period (.) is your subject and the bar (|) is the depth of field or DOF (the distance in front and the distance behind your subject that is in focus). Your DOF at f1.5 would be this |.| and at f22 would be more like this |----- . -----|. Here is a link to a DOF calculator that may help - http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html

Daniel,

Thanks. I went to the website. This was the photo I was referring to in my original question. I went on to the website.

That is odd... don't get me wrong... I was able to download and see your photo with my ipad but I can't with my iMac - very strange indeed. Anyway I love the shot and it does look like the Swan is a bit out of focus. The amount of grass in front of the Swan was causing the camera to focus on foreground instead of the swan in the background. What camera are you using? Are you able to Manually focus? I always adjust my focal point as I compose my shots it just comes naturally to me. I often compose shots with a little something in front of my main subject and out of focus. I have attached some examples.

Daniel,

I love your photos!! I use the Canon 40W . I should have focused on the swan. I may have used the autofocus instead of the manuel. Is it better to focus in live view where you can zoom into the subject to get a close up of the focus? Do you first set the AE and lock it in and then set the focus? AS you can tell, I am still unsure about a lot of what it takes to get a really good photo.

Thanks, Leslie H.
