Need to recover photo files... HELP!

My computer flat lined last week an even though a tech was able to get my machine back to working, none of my photos files will open. It seems as though most files were corrupted.
I have a Lenovo Idea Pad, Windows 7... any help will be appreciated.
Do you by any chance have a program called 'Eraser' on your machine? Friend in Michigan just had the same issue, old program suddenly attacked his JPEG files. Just a thought.
Take the hard drive out and go to a friend who has a Mac. Ask him if he can retrieve your photos. I have been able to do that with my Mac and helped friends still using Windows.
Hope that helps - good luck.

Are the files actually missing ot are they just not opening? Were files other than your photos also corrupted? What format are your photos in? Can you see the files listed on your computer and copy them to a USB drive or some other external device with Windows Explorer? If the software you use to view the images has a catalog such as in Lightroom and catalog is corrupt that would prevent you from opening images. Bottom line is we need more detailed info on the "corrupted" files, the format, the software you are using and the general state of the rest of your computer.

That just happened to me on a Mac. The genius at the Apple store recovered everything. When I say "everything," I mean each and every photo I had ... including those I had deleted over the years. I was reminded that when you delete, you only delete the index, not the photo itself. All your photos are there. If Windows has the equivalent of an Apple genius, you have a good chance of photo recovery. Have you thought of calling the Geek squad?

...
Is that really something he should be grateful for???

See if the tech can slave the drive. They may open on a different pc. If so you can have him copy them to portable media. Good luck. I hope you get them back.

At the risk of sounding naive, I would suggest that you download Picasa and see whether it can find and open them for you. Picasa searches your entire computer for images. It is a long shot but it is free and you lose nothing by trying.

I realize it sounds insensitive, but the human condition is like that. We generally don't learn from the mistakes of others. As a parent I learned that natural consequences were way more effective on my kids than any disciplinary action I conjured up. Where do you think the expression "I told you so..." comes from? :-)
In this case, I have a hard time believing nobody told the OP that they should bacukp their data. Regardless, we are all willing to help after the fact, but we need more info. Hopefully, the OP will come back and give us more details.

Go out and buy two 1TB external drives. You will be able to backup (twice) all your future pictures. If the computer tech can't recover your pictures, it doesn't look good. I wouldn't give up hope, though. We have some geniuses here who might have a solution.
Try Recuva. It's free and has a good reputation.
Very direct and to the point Jerry. Backup Backup Backup Backup Backup Backup Backup Backup.
I think computers should force people to backup their files so this doesn't keep happening. At the very minimum, people should have their files in two places.

Why not nine backups? And why do you set the minimum to one backup?
Make up your mind.

Because backing up can not be stressed too much. It's like insurance - it gives you peace of mind and you hope you never have to use it but you're glad you have it when something happens.

Sandisk offers a recovery program with its Extreme Pro cards. It is free for the 1st year.
