I'm with ALYN, Picasa is good. I especially like the way folders are indexed, makes finding them a lot easier. I also use it at work where finding a random photo taken years earlier is so much easier than opening each folder, searching, going to the next and so on. With Picasa I just scroll through the folders and group photos and when I see something familiar, I can then open that folder and start searching closer.

For 10 years I've only used free software, and I've never had a problem. Programs like GIMP and Picasa are usually more than adequate, and readily available for free download ... no shipping charges involved.

Besides those two programs, I've also used at least 15 other free programs downloaded from trusted sources like C-net and SourceForge. Just be careful as you download the desired programs, making sure you uncheck boxes asking you to download additional programs that you probably don't need.

Here's the link to Cnet:

And the SourceForge link:

I do have one non-free program that came with a Wacom Tablet. This program is Photoshop Elements. I do think buying a recent version of this program would be good ... it might be a little more user friendly than GIMP.

Here's more information:

Couldn't say it better myself. Those two programs, Gimp and Picasa are real gems. You may never look to buy at all they are so good. Get them from download.com and you'll be safe. They scan everything in their inventory often. Best of luck, you'll love em' really!

GIMP is free and is used by professionals. It seems to be about on a par with Photoshop. I'm finding lots of tutorials and downloadable extras and they're free too. Editors can be complicated if a beginner wants to become a master user quickly and Gimp has a lot of stuff to look into and learn. Some others are simpler but don't have the range of possibilities that Photoshop and Gimp have.
If you go for Gimp make sure you have the latest edition which, at the moment, is Gimp2.8. The earlier version is 2.6 and is quite different and while there are a lot of tutorials available for it there are becoming a lot more for 2.8, some of them only days old.
Take a look at "Meet the Gimp" on Youtube.

I tried your link but only got "PDF Split and Merge", no Photoscape. Try http://www.photoscape.org/ps/main/download.php

Update: 15 minutes later I've got it downloaded and have already learned the basics. Some good tools!

It is a Lightroom clone. I use it.

That's all I have ever used. However, do you have any suggestions on a program (similar to Picasa) that I can access from any computer? I can only edit, etc. on the computer I downloaded pics on. Hope this made sense! :)

Have a question- I love Picasa as well, but I can't access my photos in it from any location. I have to use the computer I have registered on and the pics are downloaded on. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks! :)

Personally, I would never recommend GIMP. I've had so many issues since I tried downloading that <insert expletive here> "free" software.

I downloaded it through the links provided on UHH. I have an appointment now to get a techie to strip this crap off my laptop.

IMHO: Don't do it!
