All,
On Friday 12/16 there was a theft in my house and my D5100 was also gone on this :(. I am just posting this to know & understand if there is any tracking mechanism on missing SLR's? Your help is much appreciated.

I am so very sorry that your camera was stolen.... I can imangine how you must feel..this close to the hollidays makes it worse....I'll say a prayer that you get it back....
I'm also sorry that I can't answer your question, I would be interested in knowing if there is such a thing...

Does your homeowner's insurance cover the loss?
Maybe the loss of the 5100 is multi-layered? Not only the purloinining of the camera is an issue but it may have sentimental value as well as images on the media card that can and never will be replaced? I know when my Panasonic Lumix camera was stolen five years ago I was devastated because on it were photographs of a reunion of friends and relatives I'd just taken at a memorial for a friend in Lost Nation, Vermont. I am still angry about that.

Now that the horse has left the barn, when you re-invest in camera gear, get an insurance rider to cover the loss if it happens again. It isn't very much but it is worth it. I was burgled and lost about $30k in photo gear and jewelery. Replacement was for appraised value less depreciation. Didn't hurt too bad.
Sorry to hear about your loss. Have you checked the local pawn shops? That's most likely where it ended up.

First thing I do when I walk into the house is download the pictures from my camera. Of course, if you're traveling, that may not be an option. Nowadays with WiFi cards and smart phones and iPads, you can download on the run.
One of my clients is a professional photographer. He switched to a digital camera, I guess about 3 years ago. He stopped for a cup of coffee on his way back from a shoot and someone broke into his car, stole his camera, laptop, accessories, the whole works. Fortunately, his insurance covered everything, and I had set up a backup system for his computers, so his biggest loss was that day's shoot, and some very recent data that he hadn't backed up from his laptop.
I beat up all my clients about having a backup system, as hard drives are not forever.
Anyone who steals someones camera shot be shot !!
I rent, and have renter's insurance. My policy covers my equipment even when I'm on vacation. $12,000 worth of coverage, $500 deductable, $64 a year. Worth it.

Also, make a list of you gear and take photos of it. Then when you make a claim there is no question of what you have.
Renters ins. is only about $10 a month. Home owners is more but everything is covered.
I didn't take pic's of my gear. And when I was burglerized 5 years ago. I lost over $25,000. I fought with the Ins. company for 2 years and only got about half it's value.
So remember...
And so sorry for you losses.

Sorry for your loss. When you replace your camera, see if it has the ability to store copyright information. My D7000 does and one of the sites I visited recently recommended using it - theft was one of the reasons mentioned. If you find a camera similar to yours in a pawn shop, or if the police recover one, having that data stored in your cam is legal proof of ownership.

My camera will also store copyright info. However, that information can also be deleted....by anyone.
