I've read the manual and have figured out how to turn on the remote control timer. I set it for 15 min., which is supposed to active the remote control reception. The remote unit is new, but not Nikon.
My question is: How do I know the remote is sending out a signal? Does the lens in the end of the end of the remote unit light up or something? I know it is infrared, but I don't know if I should be seeing something or not.
Using a D5100 and an aftermarket remote unit.
Thanks
Steve

Look at the remote through the camera's LCD, then operate the remote as you point it at the lens. If its working, you'll see a red light. I've used several non-Nikon remotes, and they've all worked fine.
EDIT. It doesn't look like there is a 15 min option for the remote. It is either 2 seconds or immediate. See page 37 of your manual. Select Remote from the Release Mode Menu.
OK, the remote is working, I see the lens on it blinking.
Still haven't figured out how to make it fire the camera, but its late and I'll continue with it tomorrow.

You have to push auto timer button on camera until it shows remote setting then it turns it on. I have a non nikon remote and it works just fine.
Congrats! The next "problem" you will face is having the camera refuse to take a picture when you press the shutter button because you forgot to turn off the remote setting. I've done that many times. I'll take a few remote shots and forget to return it to normal. When I press the shutter button later, nothing happens - till the remote feature fires it.

I have it set so that it automatically reverts back after a few minutes.

That's good. My camera has a separate switch, which is good if I don't want it switching back to normal, but not good if I forget.
